Incidentally, I don't know that Islam fits neatly into what Christianity was in the Middle Ages. For that matter, while some branches of Christianity have changed dramatically since then, others have not. Up until Vatican II, for example, Catholicism was pretty constant for the better part of a millenium.
I suppose what I see, from my extremely limited vantage point, is that Islam and Christianity are currently in about exactly the same developmental place historically, but as you suggest predominately Muslim areas are often far, far more impoverished than most predominately Christian areas. The result being that Islamic extremism is pushed even more to the brink than is Christian. But in the end, is there much difference between a Muslim terrorist who attacks discos in Bali and a Christian one who attacks abortion clinics in Appalachia?
Anyhow, I hope your trip back to the States is safe and not-too-disappointing.
