American Club
Dad, thanks for updating the website address. I don't really understand how to edit or add pictures from here. With the dialup, I don't think it's possible.
Last night I had spaghetti with meat sauce, dr pepper, apple pie and a beer at the American club. AMAZING. Plus some pool playing with volunteers who I hadn't seen in a while. We met a marine who has been here three months and seemed nice. He called Bangladeshis "banglas" (pronounced the first "a" as in "angle") and that he had to go to a bangla class but "didn't know that shit." He likes Dhaka, even though coming from Prague it's a disappointment (really...wouldn't have guessed that one). He guards the embassy and goes to parties every night he says. It's a different world for him.
I'm going back to site with Ben this afternoon. It's been up and down these few days. I'm ambivalent about returning to site, but neither of us brought enough money or clothes to stay another night so it's back to the Raj then. I don't think we're going to Khulna for Christmas. This Dhaka trip was very unplanned and going to Khulna in a few days sounds like more travel stress than actual relaxing vacation time. Maybe the two volunteers from Foridpur will come and visit us, but I think we're staying put. I hear getting to Khulna involves a local bus (!) to a roundabout intersection, then paying some guy to stop traffic to get us onto some other bus coming from Dhaka, and arriving there (inshallah) in 4 hours. We've got to see quite a few people on this trip, which has been nice, so I don't feel like we're missing out too much. There's two years to visit Khulna, or at least past the new year...
