Today, acting on a whim, I spent 4 hours modeling the first room of the sample dungeon from the AD&D 1e Dungeon Masters Guide. Scaled up to life size. As with my earlier castle project (that I need to get back to), the idea is to create a virtual reality environment that I will someday be able to walk around inside of, as if it were real.
I don't know if I'll continue with this dungeon in particular, I just wanted something to use a dungeon easily referenced (and easily recognizable) to explore the concept. I had originally planned to do the dungeon from B1, but I either no longer have or can't find my copy.
I see vast vistas of possiblity here in virtual reality, with just a few more years for the tools to develop. Just as "ordinary" people started publishing amazing music on youtube without needing record companies, and now people are strading stl files for 3D printing, I think and hope that in a few more years we'll see an explosion in home-made 3d constructs that people will create and share. Someday soon I and some friends might be standing at the foot of those stairs, holding guttering torches aloft, ready to live out the adventures we once played with dice and graph paper.
And of course every other world is open for the making. Star Wars, Star Trek, Traveller... the possibilities are endless.
(Side note: I've wanted a less clumsy term for "virtual reality environment" for awhile. Inspired by both R. Talsorian's Cyberpunk roleplaying game andthe movie The Matrix, I've settled on "construct".)
