TVD 2.01 "The Return" - A Commentary

Sep 17, 2010 02:38

I'll keep this commentary on the 1st episode short, because I loved the episode. Really. I just have to say my piece, so I stop obsessing about it and continue on to tomorrow's ep and  messing around with fanart.

While I have a soft spot for damaged-and-in-great-need-of-fixing characters (e.g. Damon), I have to agree with some horrified people. I was so not impressed with the Jeremy scene. I was like WTH?! As if they (DE) need more angst between them. Also, it was uncalled for. I'm hoping for his sake that Damon was trying to prove some god-awful point, because if he just did it to be cruel... well that's just f*cked up. Seriously? IDK, it seemed so out of character to me. He's was becoming this great guy. Progress negated. Ugh. I know a backslide was expected, what with Elena's & Katherine's respective rebuffs, but come on! Killing Jeremy? The dude is better than that. Talk about sacrificial lamb.. for more DE tension.

Yeah, I'm a serious SE shipper (no matter how many people I know defect to the DE side, I'm not budging. I know endgame perfection when I see it. hehe)  but I have to confess I find Damon pretty wicked.

I know, crazy/conflicted/weird...but yeah. I like that he's broken yet capable of loving, but I defo do not want him with Elena. Don't trample me, DE fans. Hear me out. It's not that I hate DE. I'm open to a good real love that makes me cheer/ship tirelessly, but I like how Damon is "in development". It's this messed up facade that gives him substance & edge. He's all the better for being alone, IMO, because if he were with Elena, I don't see him making more effort on changing. He'd be subdued and would probably just try to be something he isn't without acknowledging the other people around him. She'd be trying to mold him into being a Stefan, which he is clearly not.  They're both awesome, just in different ways.

And that love triangle? Eh. TVD, don't fall into that Gossip Girl standard. Please. One triangle-laden show is enough for me. It's annoying how they keep pushing the love triangle at the expense of good character development. Damon's pain & change from being soulless into good is what makes him interesting, now it's all Delena drama. Damon has more depth than that lovesick person.  He's Damon for crying out loud! He's epic. I want to see him become good for himself, because he wants to, not because he's in some competition with his brother for yet another girl.

I really hope people get over pitying Damon & bashing Elena soon. She's just being honest, people. Damon needs that above all, after what Katherine did to him - leading him on. I would rather that Damon be hurt now, than try to force Elena, consequently messing up his bond with both her and Stefan (probably alienating Bonnie, Jeremy, Caroline, and  Jenna in the process when he ends up hurting Elena).

It's pretty obvious Elena's with the better man for her. Damon is great, but Stefan was meant to be with her. I mean, the show's premise is about diaries - and these two are the journal writers after all. (Although I do have to wonder what ever happened to the diary readings/narration. I miss it now that they seem to have scrapped that idea. Darn, I miss hearing their narrations, getting a glimpse into SE's thoughts. It was one of the things that got me to love the show.)

Okay, I went off-topic. Back to it. Stefan may not be as dark & alluring as Damon, but he's the all-around perfect guy for Elena. Soulmates. Yeah Stefan's cheesy at times & not as witty as Damon in others, but the guy's willing to sacrifice everything and anything for Elena. I'm a hopeless romantic & this guy, he just ticks off all the boxes for the ideal man. He's soft-spoken and sweet in nature, but at the same time, Stefan knows when he has to step up, toughen up. Stefan's serious and weighed down with responsibility, but he can laugh with Elena and just goof off. He's also done some introspection and is self-aware, knowing how he feels. He's got it together basically. What I'd give for a mature, open-minded, well-rounded hot guy right now. lol. Stefan would take himself out of the equation if he thought Elena was better off.  That kind of selfless and unconditional love is not something one ignores. If you had a guy who'd do that for you, wouldn't you pledge undying love for him, too? Can we really blame Elena?

With that said, this show just moved in to my #1 favorite show slot. Sorry, GG. I'll come back when you stop screwing up Serena & runing my love for that girl. :)
