Thanks to "connections" I'm today in Stockholm in the career fair called Armada in KTH (Royal Technic University, I guess). The event is huge and takes two days. The catalog of the fair is more then 300 pages. And there is no possibility to come and decide where to go. It took me a couple of days to define the companies what I'd like to visit. :-)
The two buzz words popped up during almost all my talks with company representatives. They are "consultancy" and "project management". The former raises the question to me if everybody consults who will do some production. It sounds like everybody was managers in Russia around 10 years ago. Here in the fair I met very young guys. They told me something like: "Yes, I've just graduated and I work as consultant". Oops.. That must be something wrong in my perception. I assumed that to give advices to somebody (that what consultants do, I guess), it's good to work in the field before to understand where what and so on. I must have old-fashioned view on the issue :-( Now I try to figure out my future as a consultant... still seen a kind of blurred...
Secondly "project management" is everywhere but I am still not sure that everybody understands it similarly... At least according to the official approach (in which I've dived in seriously within last two weeks due to all these stuff with the championships) this is quite serious discipline where again some field experience is required. At least we saw serious aged people last week in Espoo. Now I can conclude that to be just a manager is not cool anymore. To be Project manager is something! Projectization, project organization, project processes, pro... new business perception. Let's divide everything in phases, call them projects and hire consultants to sort all the mess out. Are you really believe that with such approach we can ever overcome the crisis?
The outcome of my visit? One is very obvious, as usual there are a lot of freebie stuff that is sometimes cute, sometimes absolutely unnecessary. Every time I'm amazed more and more about creativity of the business-souvenir companies! Ok, pens and candies are too simple now. But sometimes I found something I can't even explain what it for.
The second outcome is inspiration, inspiration to believe that it is still possible to find a job and over-compete abundunce of other candidates. Recruiting people have a special talent, they can't openly tell "No. thank you". They will continue assure with a smile to upload CV in web-site and to join the talented-pool :-) The second my favorite myth from HR is that all vacancies are published in the wed-site. "Check our web-site and you find happiness there!" :-) I question myself how they worked 10-15 years ago when Internet was not so advanced! Anyway in such inspired mood I will arrive home tonight and start writing more and more cover letters... before I get quite usual "Your skills and experience are impressive, but... "
Still don't give up!
