what the hell???
Ok, so I went for my "reading of the blood work" appointment at the doctor's today. So she's talking about this and that, then gets to my blood cell counts.
She tells me I have more than the normal amount of red blood cells and that the cells themselves are much smaller than they should be.
Hmm... ok....
Then she throws it at me:
"Are you of Mediterranean decent?" She asks.
"Yes, I'm half Greek, why?" I say.
"You have Thalassemia Trait. This means you carry the Thalassemia disease and could pass it on to your children if you have a child with someone who also has Thalassemia Trait. So before you have kids you need to see a genetic counselor."
How the heck is it that I'm JUST finding out about a genetic condition I've had SINCE BIRTH when I'm 27 years old?????
