Most of you know
jacks_key who is one of my favorite BBM fiction writers.
About a year ago she told on her lj that she wrote a novel called "Inertia". As I can't write for a penny and so can't give back any of the pleasure the writers give us my way to support them is to purchase everything they puplish. So I purchased the book a while ago.
I have to admit I was a little bit reluctant to read it because it deals with "the confusion and heartbreak of young adulthood" - something I left behind for at least 25 years or so.
But a couple of weeks ago I went to a short trip to Lucerne and I took the novel with me because it's a small book, just rigth for a short vacation when you don't have a lot of time to read.
And I was surprised that it only took me one night - of course I was missing a lot of my desperately needed beauty sleep - to go through it because I was captured and couldn't stop reading.
The ones who read Vicki's bbm -stories already know that she can write. But Inertia is way better written - yes that's possible ;) - though the publisher states that it wasn't edited at all at the specific preference of Vicki.
The story deals with 4 friends and the prologue indicates that it is no funny high school story but really a story about growing up, taking responsibilities for your life and for the life of your friends and -sadly - that you can't turn back the clock.
Vicki avoids stereotyping, her characters are complex. So is Jonna the good looking high school girl with a lot of self confidence but she isn't the bitch these girls often are painted in this kind of novels. Jonna cares for her friend Milly who is very shy and has low self-esteem. Milly on the other hand isn't the kind of Cinderella girl a lot of high school related novels are about, she doesn't change from one day to another becoming everybody's darling. Inertia is a very moving story about what friendship could be and should be and what happens if you don't dare to be all open about your feelings, if you keep secrets.
You can purchase Inertia at amazon. You have to look for "Vicki McCarthy Inertia". You can also google for it, some booksellers are cheaper than amazon.
It was published in 2006 by Publish America, ISBN 1-4241-4664-X
Have fun reading it
