tay0720 and I have a habit of prompting ourselves when we talk and I'm always too lazy to write but decided I wanted to this time. This is based off one of Lea's tweets.
Disclaimer: This is all a work of fiction. None of this ever transpired to the best of my knowledge.
Of Elephants and Ice Packs
It wasn’t so much “child proof” but more like “human proof.” Or at least that’s what Lea thought as she tried to open her bottle of pain killers. Tenth time is the charm right? Lea sighed in frustration and she stared at the bottle as if it were a formidable foe. Her entire mouth was killing her. After the anesthesia wore off after her surgery (to extract all her wisdom teeth), Lea was in a whirlwind of pain.
Not only did she look like a chipmunk, she couldn’t even open her mouth without wanting to scream.
Finally, with one particularly hard push and twist (that left her hand aching), Lea managed to open the bottle. She breathed a sigh of relief as she popped two pills in her mouth very gingerly and took a drink of water. She was only supposed to take one but the pain was too much and she really wanted to sleep.
She changed into her pajamas and hopped into bed with every intention of falling right to sleep. She could feel the pills kicking in because her mouth was feeling better but Lea was still wide awake. And uncomfortable. Whenever she lay her face on the pillow, pain would shoot through her jaw.
Finally she settled for just lying on her back but had some irrational fear that the gauze that was still in her mouth would end up lodged in the back of her throat and she’d choke to death.
“Damnit,” she cursed and threw her pillow across the room. Lea sat up and was tempted to call her mom to come over. She hated that she only had one bedroom and whenever her parents visited, she had to put them up in a nice hotel.
A knock on her front door distracted her from hitting the call button on her phone. Lea dragged herself out her bed and opened the door. She would’ve smiled when she saw Dianna standing in front of her holding what looked like a gift bag but her swollen cheeks prevented it.
Dianna smiled though and tilted her head at her adorable girlfriend. “Look at you in your purple pajamas.”
Lea pouted the best she could as she pulled Dianna into her apartment. “I can’t sleep,” whined.
Dianna tried to contain her laughter. She knew Lea was a little loopy from her meds but she looked so adorable with her cheeks puffy and complaining like a petulant child.
She leaned down and kissed Lea gently on the forehead. Lea put her arms around her neck and buried her face in Dianna’s shoulder. “I wanna go to sleep, can you help me?” Lea mumbled.
Dianna pulled back and looked into Lea’s hazy eyes. “How many pills did you take?”
Lea scrunched her nose, trying to think. “Two,” she finally answered.
Dianna saw the pill bottle on the counter and grabbed it. “Lea,” she said shaking her head. “It says take one. These are very strong, you know that?”
Lea pouted again. “My mouth hurt.”
“Come on, Theodore,” Dianna said shaking her head again. She grabbed Lea’s hand and led her to the couch, pushing her down to sit. “Stay.” She set the gift bag she was carrying on the coffee table. “And don’t open that yet,” she warned before heading to the kitchen.
Lea scratched her head in confusion trying to figure out how she got from the front door to her couch. “I’m Alvin!” Lea called out once her brain caught up to her.
Dianna laughed as she opened the freezer to pull out an ice pack. She grabbed a dish towel from one of the drawers and headed back to the couch where Lea was reaching for the gift. “What did I just say?”
Lea looked up at her girlfriend who had her eyebrow raised. “I don’t remember.”
Dianna rolled her eyes and grabbed the bag. She sat down on the corner of the couch with her back leaning against the arm and beckoned Lea. “Come here,” she said as she spread the dish towel across her chest. She put the ice pack on top of it.
“What are you doing?” She crawled over to Dianna and looked at the ice pack curiously. “You’ll get cold.”
“I’m helping you fall asleep. Now, come here.” She pulled Lea gently down so her swollen cheek rested on the ice pack.
Lea mumbled about it being too cold but snuggled closer to Dianna.
“This isn’t going to work,” she said against the ice pack but her eyes were already getting droopy.
“Shhh.” Dianna pulled the blanket from the back of the couch and covered the both of them. She ran her fingers through Lea’s hair and kissed the top of her head. “Do you want your gift?”
Lea mumbled something in the affirmative so Dianna reached down and pulled out the stuffed animal she bought.
“It’s an elephant,” Lea said reaching for it. It was rather cute but Lea frowned again. “He’s smiling.” She shoved the elephant right in Dianna’s face that it took her by surprise.
“Is that a bad thing?”
“Yes!” Lea whined. “He’s already happy, he doesn’t need my love. Why couldn’t you get me a sad looking elephant? That one would need my love.” Lea took back the elephant and glared at it. “There are other elephants who need my affection.”
Dianna couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst out laughing. “Baby, go to sleep.”
Despite her complaints for the elephant, Lea hugged it close to her and put her face back down on the ice pack. “You’re comfy.”
Dianna smiled and started to rub Lea’s back. “Go to sleep.”
“Love you.”
“Love you, too, Theodore.”
It only took two minutes before Dianna heard Lea softly snoring with her mouth open, slightly drooling.
And she couldn’t love her more.
