BRIDAL BLOG - What a Doll!

Dec 27, 2009 14:35

Some kid pooped on the toilet seat at the library today.

So! This might be my favorite blog yet. While acknowledging that dolls are creepy, I have to confess a dear love for two enterprises: Mattel Barbie and the American Girl dolls. Barbie beats the latter out, however, not only because she has 40+ years of 1 Bazillion outfits + variations, but because 10% of that bazillion are bridal outfits*

This probably should be a two-parter blog... but aw hell, I'll give it to you and I'll give it to you good.

Here are some of the luscious treats Mattel has bestowed upon the bridal community:

REAL FASHION DESIGNERS

Barbie is blessed with the supreme privilege of having been dressed by some of the world's finest designers and her wedding day was no different. If you can't afford a couture bridal gown, you may be able to satisfy yourself with a miniature:

Monique Lhuillier ("Designer Brides - Gold Label Collection")

Barbie sports a very tasteful spin on the ball gown silhouette - it's one of the few Barbie gowns that would probably translate well life-size! Here's an actual Lhuillier gown that bears some similarities!

Vera Wang ("The Romanticist - Platinum Label Collection")

This is not technically a Barbie Bride, but uh, WHO CARES? I would wear this and I would wear it good. Too many amazing Vera Wang gowns to pick just one but here's a taste.

Carolina Herrera ("Designer Brides - Platinum Label Collection")

I'm having a serious Barbie-gasm here, and its barely started. Here's a real Herrera inspiration.

Reem Acra ("Designer Brides - Platinum Label Collection")

OH SNAP. Talk about owning the room, Barbie. How about you put that money towards a HOUSE for crisesake?? But Reem was never one for simplicity. (actually, she has some very tasteful gowns.)

Badgley Mischka ("Designer Brides - Platinum Label Collection")

This is getting a little see-thru Jewel-tastic for my tastes, but great hair, Barb!

Then there's the designer who just has his own Barbie line period: the one and only Bob Mackie!

Couture Confection Bob Mackie Barbie

Now who's really gonna wear that to their wedding, Bob??

Empress Bride Barbie

Well there was no need to one-up me, Bob!!

And then there's Robert Best, who designed the 1999 Millenium Bride Barbie:

Remember that Swarovski Crystal curtain from the Oscars I loved? He took it and made it into a dress. Hard to believe this was the fellow who created the phrase "Don't Bore Nina!" on Project Runway. (PS it took me like 45 minutes to find any blog recapping that season of PR - thanks random Dallas blogger!)

And lastly, this isn't a designer barbie - but doesn't it bear a striking resemblance to Lazaro's overly embroidered brides?

REMEMBER THE '90S?

If you don't, you can remember through Barbie. Specifically through their 1996 Porcelain Wedding Flower Collection.

Blushing Orchid Bride Barbie

Romantic Rose Barbie

Star Lily Barbie

Sophisticated Wedding Barbie

Oof.

VINTAGE BARBIES

Let's cleanse the palate shall we?

Here Comes the Bride

Totally classic 1960's dress! And that beehive? You fierce lady!

1960 Wedding Day Barbie (I think)

The original bridal barbie, at least from what I can surmise. Boy that original Barbie face is a little sexy is it not? What a whooo-re!

Elvis and Priscilla Barbie

Well this isn't an original Barbie design so maybe it doesn't count. WHATEVER, my blog.

Maria Therese Barbie

Now... this dress mystifies me. First off it was Marie-Therese, was it not? I've no second-of-all actually. That's it. But it's a sweet gown!

Elizabeth Taylor in Father of the Bride Barbie

I like the gown on Barbie much better. Though it is truly vintage classic!

Bride's Dream Barbie:

Don't you just wanna take this girl home to mamma('s daughter)?

OTHER

Interestingly, they went simpler for the 2000 Millenium Barbie:

Also, if you can't afford a designer bridal gown, maybe you'd prefer to go with a David's Bridal piece:

The Romantic Bride

The Eternal Bride

The Unforgettable Bride

And just when you were afraid you couldn't live up to a freakishly proportioned doll of epic fashion sense, Barbie proves that she can make grave mistakes:

NEVER WEAR A KNIT OR CROCHETED WEDDING GOWN. THE END.

Bonus: Visit this link to see what I've renamed the "WTF Ken Groom".

*Statistics are fishy at best.
