THE BRIDAL BLOG - Rainbow Wedding (of the Non-San Francisco Variety)

Hello -

OK last week I said I was going to do Themed Weddings for my next blog, but I cannot tell a lie:  I wasn't thrilled with what I was finding.  Most of the themed weddings I came across were medieval/renaissance, Steampunk or color-themed.  A fair amount of more unique and fun themes do exist - but more often than not, the theme is concentrated in the decorations and invitations and such - and the bride just wears a plain old white dress.  And this blog is about the gowns people!!  I wanted to see more of this:

a dress made entirely of creme puffs                                            Hello Kitty Gown

But more often than not, I got this:

Come on!! If you're going to have a superhero wedding, I want you to be dressed as SuperBride!! Damn you.

So if you want to see a Star Wars themed wedding (and there are plenty of them), Google it.  I will probably do a blog dedicated to medieval weddings, and one for Steampunk as well.  But today, we are going to explore what is out there for the Woman in Anything BUT White - colorful wedding gowns!

Okay we'll just go in spectrum order.

RED:
This used to be the "racy" color for a bride to wear - though I guess any color other than white was the "racy" one.  More often than not, you see this color gown in a goth/punk/fantasy themed wedding - this one below was in what the couple called a "post-apocalyptic wedding" though I hardly think we'll have access to such lush finery after the apocalypse.

What I do like about it is the bustling - I think it's an interesting alternative to pick-ups (I know, I just don't give pick-ups a rest LEAVE THE PICK-UPS ALONE!!)

Unfortunately, red is the quickest color to make a bride look cheap:

'Course, that could be the styling.  I think you'll agree with me though, that as a general rule (and you'll see more examples), if you have a colorful wedding gown, do NOT wear a matching veil.

ORANGE:
Orange is such a fabulous color, and a rarity among wedding gowns.  The following bride didn't use it so well:

But I do enjoy this autumnal one:

YELLOW

Another hard color to pull off, but who wouldn't want to look sunny on the happiest day of their life?  The following Japanese gown I thought I hated, but it's growing on me for some crazy reason - pair it up with a yellow bob wig and have a crazy anime housewife wedding:

The following is VERY ornate, and very Belle - definitely "pretty pretty princess" but the beadwork is pretty and the color choice is lovely

GREEN
Again, this color seems a lovely choice for brides - either it makes a bold statement, or it conveys freshness and life!  Gone badly, it could be a little "swamp thing" but Vera Wang did fairly well (if you did haute couture) with this unconventional piece:

Or, you know, you could do this one:

BLUE:
Not so many blue wedding gowns out there, but here are a couple of cute ones:

I think I like this one most because of the car.  The bride claims this dress took 100 hours to make....and I think to myself "REALLY? come on now" but maybe she included crinoline construction...and maybe she did it by hand.

Here's a cool one by Reem Acra:

VIOLET
I found two very lovely gowns in one of MY favorite colors:

Vera Wang = THE MASTER  I am getting married in this. Right now.

The following gown looks gorgeous on this bride - though she says it's a medieval themed wedding and 'tain't very medieval:

BLACK:Again, popular with the goths and punks, but here's a gorgeous bride in the dismal color:

But again - don't wear a black veil unless it's halloween themed!

The dress that inspired this post I found on offbeatbride.com - a blog started by the author of Offbeat Bride, and one Jill Blevin's favorite bridal inspiration.  This dress needs to make its way into my life, even if I'd look ridiculous in it:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH SOOOOOOOOO GOOOORGEOUSSSSSSSSSS
