THE BRIDAL BLOG - Disney

HELLO!

I'm procrastinating my gym visit right now. Perfect time for a bridal blog!

A few weeks ago, I used one of Disney's bridal gowns in a blog - one of the Ariel ones - but Kirstie Kelly has a whole line of gowns that she designs, under "Kirstie Kelly for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings." There are a ton of gowns, and the gimmick is that each disney princess has a line of them - so there are a bunch of "Belle" gowns and "Aurora" gowns and "Jasmine" etc and they just introduced "Giselle" from Enchanted. Initially, the gowns did reflect or hint at the style of the animated gowns the princesses wore - but I suppose, for example, that a bride would feel out of date wearing a gown completely reminiscent of Aurora's ballgown (very '80s). Plus it's a limiting idea, so for each succeeding season, Kelly has designed the gowns based on each princess's qualities, which we will discuss as we go (actually they did this in the first season as well, but made sure to include a dress that visually reflected the disney princess gown). I am going to present you with a gown for each princess from the very first season, and with a gown from the most current season. If you like or loathe what you see, I highly recommend a visit to the official site! (I highly recommend visiting it because they feature a lot of detail photos which helps get to know the gowns much better as some of the photos are hard to gauge. FYI, the site is very slow loading for me, but usually worth it)

Snow White

Disney Bridal says that the collection reflects "her gentle grace and beauty" and "tell[s] the story of sweet elegance and enduring love" thru silk, chiffon, satin and appliques

Spring 2008

This is a very successful representation of the Princess without being a carbon copy of the gown. From the photo, it seems a little too plain for me, but the pleating is a lovely touch, and it buttons up the back.

Spring 2009

I think this gown captures the idea of sweet innocence that Snow White represents, though I would keep the skirt in a softer fabric.

Sleeping Beauty

Well, I'm predisposed not to like these gowns because let's face it - the most important aspect of Aurora's gown is that it changes colors ha! Disney says that her story of "discover[ing] she's already a princess" is represented in "regal fabrics of satin, chantilly and netting...crystal and pearl embellishments"

Spring 2008

I'm truly not sure how I feel about this gown.... I think it has potential hideousness... if the overlayer were in lace, I'd probably be puking. But there is something about it I like. I don't know if I like it as a visual interpretation of her gown, but I think it's an interesting choice for a more conservative bride.

Spring 2009

This one certainly says regal, and I think it captures some elements of the original princess (the shapes of the beading on the skirt sort of reflect that triangle shaping in her gown!) - its not a particular favorite of mine, but it's pretty enough.

Cinderella

Again - this dress has some expectation behind it. I mean FIRST her dress is built by mice (I sort of liked that dress too), and then this one is pure magic.

Disney describes the Cinderella line as "classic glamour... silk tulle and duchess satin make these gowns fit for a princess" (duchess satin for a princess?? bitch please. ha) "scattered crystal and silver threading" also included to add magical elements.

Spring 2008

This gown definitely deserves a visit to the homepage to check out the detail of the sleeves and bodice - it's got this delicate beading, and the sleeves are actually sheer cap sleeves like the princess's ballgown. Again, I think it's a lovely choice for a bride with simple, demure tastes. (well...simple as in....simple ballgown? is that an oxymoron?)

Spring 2009

Bleh - this is an example of pickups gone wrong I think. And I think that it would be fun if each princess line stuck to a sillhouette, and this weird dropped waist thing doesn't gel with Cinderella to me.

Ariel, The Little Mermaid

Okay so maybe it might be too obvious to have EVERY Ariel ballgown be a mermaid style...but why not?? Most of the gowns in this line are NOT mermaid style - although most include some detail on the lower half of the skirt at any rate. Disney pays homage to this princess with "touches of pearl beading and underwater imagery...silk cascades and drapes for a sultry look..." yeaaah that's right, sultry! Ariel was a whore.

My favorite dress is the one I featured the last time, so here's a different one:
Spring 2008

This one fits the bill for animated Ariel most of all I think - the sillhouette is uber-mermaid, and the rhinestone clasp suggests that shell bra she rocks. And it is pretty. I do think that in general (and I mentioned this last time), this line tends to look a little nightgown-y. But I guess I like a little bedroom in my wedding gown. Just not a LOT, Pnina Tornai!!

Spring 2009

I can appreciate the ideas going into this, with the teirs and the bust detail. But it comes together a little too Muppety or Barbie for my tastes.

Belle, Beauty and the Beast

Talk about a ball-gown. This is another one that could have bad '80s or Southern Belle potential. Disney describes this line as "stylish sophistication" which I guess means it reflects that Belle is the most beautiful girl in town but has the smarts to look beyond a book's cover? "Ribbon and bands of satin", "taffeta and tulle blooms", "scattered beading and lovely lace" also are Disney's attributes of stylish sophistication... to me, it sounds a little schizophrenic. Haha

Spring 2008

First off, I LOVE that this is a champagne tone, and wish they'd embraced this theme for the other princesses (a pale pale blue cinderella perhaps? a blush sleeping beauty?) I also don't mind the pickups in this one, maybe because I like how they represent Belle's tiers without mirroring them. I also think the neckline is interesting, though I do wonder how far you can see down it. The back of it is also really beautiful if you visit the homepage, you will see.

Spring 2009

Ok so this...isn't so hot. Though I do have to say, I cannot imagine being an uber-conservative bride with taste (the Talbots bride, if you will) - it must be very hard to find a gown. And I suppose this isn't the worst Puritanical gown of the lot. But it just looks so dated! look at this one, and look at the sleeping beauty "covered up" one - and see the difference in using lace vs. chiffon? okay maybe only I do. That's fine - a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries.

Jasmine, Aladdin

I'm predisposed to like this line the best because it requires the most creative thinking. Jasmine didn't really WEAR a dress, she hated being a princess, and the eastern vibe forces disney to be unconventional. They advertise the Jasmine line as "bohemian...draped...exotic details include clustered beadwork, applique lace and just a touch of wanderlust." (the perfect dress to wear if you're thinking of bolting pre-vows?)

Spring 2008

This gown is gorgeous, and my favorite in the collection. Too bad it would only look pretty on princess jasmine. Seriously though - the color, the pleating, the fabric, LOVE IT!

Spring 2009

This one I don't like so much. The beading has an eastern flair I guess, but I don't see a whole lot of Jasmine in here... though it does suggest strong woman I suppose. (And Ariel, Belle and Jasmine were the first princesses to really put forth that strong woman vibe, so it's important their bridal gowns reflect that).

Giselle, Enchanted

This is my favorite Giselle dress - she makes it out of curtains, which is so Maria Von Trapp of her! There is only one dress in this line so far, which is a bummer, because Giselle's dresses rock a whole bunch of different looks that would have been fun to capture. I'm assuming though, that they based their dress on this green one (which was my favorite in the movie). Disney pays homage to Giselle's "beguiling spirit....cascading leaves of organza and netting capture [her] romantic view of nature" which is an interesting way of looking at it (she does sing with cockroaches, after all)

Spring 2009

This is another gown that benefits from detail shots...The fabric is lovely. I'm not that thrilled by the cut of the dress though. Train is definitely pretty, but the cut looks unflattering and ill-fit. I suppose though, that it would have been much tougher to model a bridal line after Giselle's actual wedding dress though:

I'd still like to see them try though! tee hee!
Ok time to go elliptical it before I gain back those .23 pounds i've lost.
