Summary: When the nation of Khemed, ruled by Tintin's friend, Emir Mohammed ben Kalish Ezab, is taken over by Bab El Ehr and the Emir has to go into hiding, Tintin and Captain Haddock fly out to Khemed's capital, Wadesdah, to find him. But their enemies are one step ahead. Almost blown up in a plane, barred from Wadesdah, and hunted by patrols, Tintin and Haddock manage to find the Emir at last, who puts them on a vessel to Mecca, whereupon they uncover an African slave-trade operation, headed by the infamous Roberto Rastapopoulos.
