So I just received some photos of the tenacious d concert, and felt that this was an optimal time to share them, and my stories of the evening with you.
I went to the concert with Gabe and Stephanie, and Stephanie's friend Sam. In preparation for the concert, we went to see The Pick of Destiny the weekend before, and am glad we did, as there were multiple references to it... and the concert basically followed the same plot line. When going to see the movie, it was opening weekend, and the movie was only playing in one theatre in all of downtown toronto, and it was saturday night. All of these things normally = sold out. So we got there about half an hour early, got our tickets, rushed passed the concession to the theatre to pick out some good seats before they were all taken... to discover that our fears were unfounded. There were maybe 10 other people in a silver city style giganto theatre. At show time there were maybe 20, and during the show, we were the only ones who seemed to be enjoying it. I knew that the concert wasn't sold out, and it was in a big coliseum. Then I heard that there had been an entire article in the paper that's whole basis was "Why are Tenacious D playing in a giant coliseum in Toronto?". Needles to say, I was concerned that the concert crowd would be as big and as excited as the movie crowd, which would probably change the dynamic quite a bit.
So on to concert night. We had a few beers in preparation, then headed down to the concert, just in time to see NEIL HAMBURGER perform. Pretty awesome. I'd say 90% of the people had no idea who he was, and 75% of the people absolutely hated him... some of the general sentiments from the crowd were "You suck!", "Get off the stage!", "That's offensive!", "Tell better jokes!", etc.. He told an amazing joke about Courtney Love, and why she didn't have cranberry sauce at thanksgiving dinner. Remind me to tell it next time I see you.
By Tenacious D time, there were actually quite a few people there... I'd say that the floor was over half full, which is probably a few thousand people. So even though not sold out, still more people than at the movie. I'm guessing that everyone who likes tenacious d lives in the suburbs, and that's where they went to see the movie. Or, all those people at the concert aren't true fans.
I had seen some clips of Tenacious D playing with a full band, and was hoping the concert would be more like their DVD - just the two of them. At the beginning of the concert, I was happy to see Jack and Kyle came out on their own. They played a few diddies. Some new ones from their movie, and some oldies but goodies.
These photos are courtesy of Gabe's cell phone, and kinda didn't turn out too well. Here they are in Kyle's living room. You may be able to make out the Dio poster on the wall.
I would say the main difference between their DVD and this show was production value. Like there were set changes, and characters, and cut scenes. So at one point about halfway through the show, they are electricuted by a home made electric guitar, and end up in hell. A video of them is projected onto a big curtain, and we see them meeting a bunch of guys (the antichrist, colonel sanders, and charlie chaplin), and they decide to form a band. The curtain falls! And then we see the whole set with flames and stuff.
there's JB rocking out in hell. Look how close we were. When they did set changes and stuff... we could almost touch them.
Here is another pic. You can kinda make out the guy on the right in the red velvet jacket, with horns on (a la the devil), who is none other than Lee. Over the course of the concert he also played himself (kinda), a giant mushroom, a police officer... uh... i don't remember what else.
Anywhoo. It was good. After the show they did a couple more acoustic encore songs just the two of them, and then one song with the band I think. I really had to pee by the end though, so that is pretty much all I was thinking about, which could be why my memory fails me.
