So I've chatted with matek about my previous post, and he encouraged me to post more photos of the new place. I think he is particularly interested because he's going to get to stay here for a couple weeks in June (YAY!), and wants to know what he's in for. Well maybe these photos will just be so mind blowing that all of you will also want to come and visit this summer...
We will start off with a photo of the inside of the cottage. You can see the living room and kitchen, to the left is a covered porch/bedroom, and to the right are two other bedrooms.
Next we will move to the back porch. So in the summer, I hope to have other people sitting at the table with me enjoying a beer. There is also a bbq not seen in the photo, which will also be enjoyed.
And finally, pehaps the most exciting part of the house... A stereo with a record player, radio, tape deck, AND 8-track - wow!
In other news, Brad and Louise have arrived and we've started banding birds and checking out the sites. I heard my first hooded warbler of the season, and got a glimpse at a female. I can't wait to find my first nest. Today we went to one of the sites to check it out. I was on my own, and decided to cut through part of the forest that I never go through to get back to the van faster. I was halfway back when I hear a 'whoosh' coming from behind going right over my head, I look up, and remember why I never go to this part of the forest... a male Northern Goshawk is perched on a branch above me. They were in the same area last year, but I had forgotten about how it attacked my field assistant several times. The male starts calling a nasal 'kak-kak-kak-kak-kak-kak-kak-kak-kak' and I hear another bird woosh over my head... the female. You may not be aware of this, but female hawks are larger than male hawks. And female Nothern Goshawks are very, very big. She swooped down again, this time coming at my face, causing me to yelp with surprise and fear. I quickly pulled my hood over my head to prevent my hair from being ripped out of my head, and started booking it to the nearest trail. I am being attacked by 2 Goshawks that are following me and keep swooping down right over my head. Then all of a sudden 'whack'... the female hit me in the head from behind... and hard. My head went all tingly and I started seeing those little black floaty dots. So I grabbed a large stick and held it upright right against my head, so that the bird would hit it rather than me. It worked, and the stick was hit in further attacks rather than myself. I made it out alive, and in future, will send my field assistants into that part of the forest to search the area for hooded warblers.
