in other news, i read vox nova because sometimes it's interesting (like recent posts on the danger of conflating religion & patriotism) and because sometimes it pisses me off, which is fun. i'm not gonna lie.

like tonight, in a post about high school kids & minimum wage:

The only thing I'm really convinced of is the social teaching that free men ( Read more... )

For it being a Catholic site I'm really confused why they think those without children should either be a religious or they are just selfish. Once again they biggest problem I have with this kind of thinking is you never know who doesn't have kids by choice and who really would like children but isn't able to have them. To make such statements is rediculously hurtful to those who are unable to have them. Not that I think those who just don't want kids are being selfish but they tend to be a bit thicker skinned about things ( ... )

$8.00?!

I thought I hit the jackpot when I had neighbors who would pay be $20 for babysitting their twins (let's see, that was usually from 6:00 to 12:00, so about $3.33/hr).

Even minimum wage isn't close to $8.00 (at least around here). Hell, I made $10.00/hr working for three years with a college degree (granted, it was in poetry, but still ;-)

i usually got $5/hour, but i was a regular for a family with three boys, and a well-off family raising their two grandchildren.

i think at $7.93/hour washington has the highest minimum wage in the country.

Here in Seattle minimum wage is right at or just under $8 an hour. I can't remember the exact amount but if it's less than $8 it's within 50 cents ( ... )

i'm looking forward to their proper post on the subject. i -really- don't think that statement was an accurate catholic perspective.

i was totally down with the rest of the post, though, which was why i made it that far. as a teenager i certainly wasn't worth more than minimum wage, if that!

Let me know if they do end up making a proper post on the subject. I'd be interested in reading it.

It definatly isn't a Catholic perspective. I did some quick reference and the CCC lists being single just as much a vocation as marriage for layity. Also under Humane Vitae PJP II states several times that married couples who aren't able to have children are in no way being "punished" or less valid than those with children. It's just that God has a different calling for them in life.

Myself I hate that society has a perseption that if you don't want children that thier is something wrong with you. Not everyone is cut out to be a parent and it's not like it's a job you can try out for a couple years and quit if you don't like. Being a parent isn't an easy job and we can usually use the support of our non-child having friends the most since the friends with kids are too busy to help! :)
