someone called for dennis and woke me up, dammit.
so. that big gay wizard movie. spoilers, obviously.
in no particular order:
- s/r. all of it. but especially the transformation. and the old married couple line.
- the way the map looks
- how magic just -happened- every-day like, not like an event.
- the everyday life bits up in the dormitory. the hanging-out bit and ron's dream. *draws hearts all over him*
- speaking of which, ron. ron. oh, and ron. and the twins.
- the whole look, right from the beginning, with the handheld.
- remus & swing.
- the boggart. the effects were perfect, not overdone.
- the knight bus! i can't wait for the dvd - i want to freeze frame the ads. i hope there's nifty behind the scenes stuff - i want to see more of the detail!
- also, "stroke it".
and, oh! this, this is my hogwarts.it's overgrown and dusty. everything about how the film looked, actually. it was -real-, not a disneyland ride where you ooh and ahh at all the shiny things. and the students -look- like real students. quidditch! first, the effects there were amazing. and the kids with the face paint and everything - it was just so real. the contrast is stark because we watched PS and CoS last night as well, and at the matches there everyone is starched and ironed with their house scarves just so. and here, it's not forced. this is how kids look! this is how kids act!
i'm just going in circles "handheld! realism! omg! *heartheartheart*"
dumbledore. is it wrong to like gambon better than harris? he was less ... flippant, maybe. a wee bit restrained and dark. which i like, because dumbledore, especially in book 5, creeps me out.
the only lines that felt forced were when harry's telling hermione that it was him, not his father that conjured the patronus. i would have cut that and put in a bit when lupin left, telling harry that he was moony. because, dude.
i'm just amazingly satisfied right now. i had bigbig faith in cuaron (see
this entry) and i was not disappointed. i came into this movie with pretty fucking high expectations. i am not a fan of the first two films. i own them, because i'm a fangirl. but the movies had no -heart-. they were lists of scenes checked off so that fans of the book would see what they wanted to see. this? was a -film-. an actual adaptation. it had a heart. and that heart was sirius/remus theirloveissocanon.
but i loved cuaron before. i love y tu mama tambien, i didn't like his interpretation of great expectations, but it was a beautiful film. as was a little princess. i've said all along that whenever he made a decision that threw fandom into a tizzy, it delighted me, because it showed there was a director with an actual vision, a director who wasn't afraid to take risks with the material. because you know what? i don't care if "that's not how it happened in the books". i read the fucking books. show me a fucking film. and he did. and i'm so. fucking. happy.
i read in one interview that, though cuaron thought directors like columbus and jackson were insane doing more than one film in a 'verse in a row, though he was exhausted now, he'd be interested in returning for book five or six.
he better not be messing with us.
