happy birthday, dad!

who. won't actually read this.

man. he's old :)

my dad rocks. he drove me everywhere in high school. (i still don't have a license). and by everywhere i mean everywhere. home from school whenever i had to stay late for meetings (which was a lot). movies. football games. dances (which i worked at and planned, but never actually attended with the sole exception of the father-daughter dinner dance). all of my five billion volunteer committments. he'd drive me and then he'd pull out a book and read until i was done.

he drove me to meet a friend to see the truth about cats and dogs. he sat in the van and read until a cop knocked on the door, making sure he didn't have a hooker in there. "just waiting for my daughter - she went to a movie."

he took me to my first concert. crystal gayle. the start of many years of dad-and-jaci country concerts. our last one was tim mcgraw and faith hill, two and a half years ago. we're both fans of tim. we agreed that faith looks like a porn star.

my dad always has mint lifesavers in his pockets and a frosting container full of peanut m&ms by his chair. george reminds me that he looks like the bass from rural route 4, but i always forget that he has grey hair.

my dad checks out an average of six movies a week from the library. anything from the latest almodovar to mr magoo. he has two stock reviews - "it was ok" or "it was kind of silly". the last one i remember him really liking was wonder boys. he really dug the dylan song at the end. he always pronouces dylan "die-lin".

my dad has been married to my mom for nearly 30 years. he deserves sainthood for that alone. my dad has the same sense of humor that i do. that drives my mom nuts. my dad can't stand being around illness, but he nursed my grandmother when she was dying.

my dad wished he could have given us more.

my dad thinks i hung the moon.

i think i have a lot to live up to.
