“Excuse me?” she asked, shuffling a step closer. “You kiss me,” she hissed, eyes shifting from side to side, to make sure they were alone. “And now you don’t want to be in the same building as me?”
Sam winced and glanced away. “Technically…” he conceded. “But, Andy, I -”
“Save it.” She tucked her arms up against her chest and tightened up her mouth a little. “What was it? Were you trying to like…make it better?” she guessed with a bitter laugh.
“Actually,” he began, starting to feel a little piqued. The feeling only grew stronger when she cut him off.
“Were you trying to make me forget I just got shot?” she asked, each word coming out slowly, deliberately. “ Maybe, distract me or something?”
He rubbed the bridge of his nose and then squared his shoulders as his hand fell away. “Did it work?” he asked finally, feeling cranky and cowardly all in the same second.
“What?” she asked, frowning a little. Her entire body relaxed a little with that one word. Shoulders loosened up, fists tensed, then released, and she shifted uncertainly from one foot to the other, as she played his question over in her mind.
“Did it work?” he repeated, using the same slow, cadence she’d used just a few seconds before.
Another frown. Her hand came up and pushed at a lock of hair that had fallen into her face. “I…I guess?” Andy replied, the statement so weak and whispery it was barely speech at all. And then he was sorry. It had been the worst time in the world to kiss her. He'd known it at the time, but he literally hadn't been able to help it. He'd been so grateful that she was standing in front of him, that she was solid and whole under his hands. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, tipping his head down until he found the words.
But then they heard a steady set of footsteps coming down the hall, and together, in the same instant, their heads turned to see Luke rounding the corner, his face lighting up as he caught sight of Andy.
Sam couldn’t help the curse that slipped out between his lips, but it made Andy turn her head quickly. She took a tiny step towards him, and he could have sworn she said his name, but all he could hear was the slap…slap…slap of shoes echoing down the hall.
He just shook his head and stepped back, then moved farther away, a few feet down the hall before he shrugged at her.
“Mission accomplished, I guess, huh?” he said, giving her a quick grin before he disappeared through a doorway.
Oh God. I could totally see this happening and I LOVE it. I think my favorite, unexpected thing was that she was following him around because he would definitely be avoiding her haha. Thank you for writing that :D
