December Topics: Makeup

Dec 04, 2013 21:06

Today's topic is actually me combining two different requests: one for makeup chatter and the other for top ten must-have makeup items.

I originally started to list all of the stuff that preps the face in general and then I thought, why am I doing that? That's not terribly interesting. Everyone uses almost the same kind of stuff and has their own preferences. Therefore, I will post that list, but not elaborate, and if you'd like to ask questions, you can! But I decided that I'm going to go into detail on the fun list, the colors and sparkles.

1. Brushes (EcoTools/Real Techniques)
2. Eyeshadow Primer (wherever, they're mostly all the same)
3. Pixie Epoxy (Fyrinnae)
4. Setting Spray (Skindinavia)
5. black cake aquacolor (Kryolan)
6. One Base (Cargo)
7. A Yellow Eyeliner for the waterline when I look tired (most of the time? lol)
8. Powder Foundation (I'm yellow golden-y toned at my lightest [whichever Milani cake looks like dark yellow at the moment] and I use Cargo's matte bronzer when I'm not sick)
9. Light taupe eyeliner (Sally Beauty has the best)
10. Neutrogena Healthy Volume mascara (I can't ever decide between the three shade options)

The Fun List! :D

1) Favorite eyeshadow of all time is mauve. I like it when the mauve has a distinct red shade to it, as well as purple and brown. My previous one true love was by Avon, sadly discontinued. Kyrolan has a not half bad one, but the current winner is by Fyrinnae. (I've put it into a larger pot so I can use it easier, so no names! They don't make a lot of mattes, so it's pretty easy to look up... when they get back from being overwhelmed. The only problem with indie makeup: they are easily swamped with orders.)

2) My second favorite eyeshadow is gold. Bright sparkly gold looks really good with my skin tone and means I can easily not look sick. The best ones I have are two crème shadows from Maybelline, the Color Tattoo ones? That whole line of eyeshadow is amazing, best crème shadows on the market bar none.

3) One of my favorite 'something completely different, but can be subdued if you have a light hand' is aqua eyeliner. I have a cheap one from ulta that I flare out a little with a sparkly aqua from Urban Decay. (I actually have a totally different meta post about this look, if anyone is interested in listening to me gab about BBC Sherlock.)

4) I normally use whatever pinky blush comes with free bags/sets/etc, but the one blush I actually invested in is Solaire from Senna Cosmetics. I like it because it is more sunkissed than Nars Orgasm and dupes are and therefore isn't ashy on me.

5) Once upon a time, I was a lot more visually punk than I am now. (I still mix and match levels of formality in clothes, but I'm not as all out as I once was.) I have left the neon blue mascara far behind me, but I do sometimes feel like shouting with my makeup and end up in frosted pink eyeshadow and lipstick. Or in bright berry lipsticks. I have finally graduated to actualfax red like an adult person lately and that looks good too.

6) However, my favorite lippy is Henne from Lancôme. Supposedly, it's meant to be a redhead color? Whatever. It's dark and gorgeous and the lighter the hand the darker it is. (also the longer it lasts) I shell out for this lipstick because it doesn't dry my lips out and it goes a long long way.

7) Lipgloss! I love lip plumpers and have a couple from LipFusion (frosted pink) and Lip Venom (clear pink) respectively. I also have totally normal raspberry lip gloss from Bourjois and lip balm from LysSyl, not a total masochist.

8) I was so punk for so long that I kinda didn't know how to do “normal” on eyeshadow. I have a nice matte dark purple and bright bronze combo that was SFW as well as sticking the pinks I have on top of a nice brown w/ maroon sparkles color I was given... but that really wasn't that matte plain look that was the only way to be taken seriously for a while there. Cargo does a great matte four eyeshadow set that is easily re-purposed into other looks. I also love their other eyeshadows, and used to buy the Christmas sets all the time.

9) If I feel in the mood, sometimes I go all out and do a dark matte blue eyeshadow. Blue looks good on my skintone, but I'm always forgetting that.

10) One of my potentially favorite looks that I haven't yet mastered is green + brown. I want somehow to flare the brown out with the green? It's based off a look that I saw in one of the Urban Decay Box of Shadows sets, but I can't get the balance right yet. And I haven't seen anyone else do anything similar (or have a larger version of that tiny picture) so I can't even try someone else's technique. But I keep trying! I love matte greens and sparkly browns by themselves however, and don't mind the occasional experiment.
