Kansas did me well last time I needed to be from somewhere else... As
asim pointed out yesterday, this hasn't stopped at all.
Racist judge story 1 and
story 2.
It's worth mentioning a few facts here:
- this is the next town over from the one I grew up in (it's really more like a bedroom community these days).
- My (white) father is married to a black woman. They live about 10 miles west of this town, and my dad has occasionally told me about some of the crap they get from both sides of the racial line that is still so very evident every day. Dad mentioned once that his biggest pile of grief comes from his wife's pastor, who doesn't like him at all.
- My mom has been dating a black man for the past several years (long distance now, as he's still back in the State Which Shall Not Be Named, but they still consider themselves to be in a relationship). They have a little bit less trouble, but still.
- After I went to college in 1990, my mom and brother informally adopted a friend of his who proceeded to live in my room until she finished high school (about 2 years, if I remember right). She's also black. This isn't really relevant, except that she's a part of my family in a complicated way...
