Thank You, For Throwing Away Your Ferret

In the summer of 2002, my husband (a wildlife control operator) was called to remove a weasel from a recycle bin in Cassatt, SC. Knowing there are no weasels in our state my husband figured it would be a ferret…and it was.
According to the person working at the recycle center that day a lady pulled in, threw away her garbage and a Rubbermaid box. The worker was curious and went to investigate the contents of the box and out popped this critter. It was apparent whoever this person was that threw this ferret away was trying to kill him. Aside from his injuries and being closed in a box with no ventilation, the day was a very hot and humid one.
My husband retrieved the ferret and brought him home. At first, I was afraid of it. I had never seen a ferret in person. They had only recently become legal to own as pets in South Carolina. It was all beat up. It smelled awful. My first thoughts were to have it put down. Obviously it was suffering. My husband had grown up with ferrets and convinced me to clean it up. I did. I took him to the vet the next day. The vet doctored him up and in just a few short days this unwanted ferret became our pet, and we named him Oskar.
His personality was adorable. He was so sweet and loving. He healed quickly. I knew nothing about ferrets and started researching everything I could. Before long, Oskar was the king of our castle with every luxury we could provide.
In return, Oskar loved us…everyone of us. He saw us through ups and downs. I can’t describe in words exactly how you could see his soul by looking into his eyes, but you could.
And we loved Oskar. Oskar was permanently scarred from his injuries inflicted by his first owner. His scar became his trademark as we visited schools and even wrote a children’s book about him. We started a rescue for ferrets and to date have helped place over a hundred ferrets.
A few years ago Oskar was diagnosed with Adrenal Disease. We all held our breath as he underwent surgery and survived this terrible illness. Oskar seemed to be indestructible.
I could sit here all day and write about all things Oskar. How he loved getting in our cabinets and eating Cheerios. How he seemed especially fond of anything green and would steal poor Kermit the Frog and drag him to his closet hiding place time and time again.
We will always love Oskar. He was the best friend we ever had. It was especially difficult when Oskar died. We had been suspicious for sometime now that his Adrenal Disease had come back. We were warned this could happen and if it did the prognosis would be grim. Our hearts ache.
So thank you, you horrible woman for throwing your ferret away. I thank God you were so heartless and horrible because from your actions we gained a friend. A best friend. A friend who can never be replaced.
Thank you from our ENTIRE family.
