Anticipatory caffeination is the key. I have a three hour long seminar class on Wednesday nights preceded by three hours straight of lectures, so I drink lots of tea on Wednesdays. I also tend to eat something mildly sweet like a cookie while in class so the sugar helps keep me awake. I also draw, fiddle with my writing utensils, crack jokes and make various slightly inappropriate comments (much to the enjoyment of my classmates), and if I am really in danger of sleeping, I take detailed notes. That's right. I purposely and intentionally will myself to pay attention and take the best notes I possibly can. Weird, eh? But it works.
