I received an email today through the department that, at first, left me terribly confused. It was promoting a conference for Young Earth Scientists.
At first, I was puzzled that they were sending out an email about a creationist conference. I mean, realistically, I don't think anyone in my department would be terribly welcome at one of those.
Then I went to
the website and determined they meant Earth scientists who are under the age of 35.
At that point, I became very disappointed. I only qualify to participate in this elite clique for about one more year. I think it might make sense to look at amount of time in the field rather than age, don't you think? Just because I'm not a spring chicken doesn't mean that I would have any less challenges than other people who are younger than me but at the same stage in their career. (In fact, I wonder if people give me sideways looks because my education has taken such a roundabout path.)
And just because my kids tell me I'm old doesn't mean external sources should validate such a view!!! I guess if they don't want me, I'll hobble somewhere else with my cane.
