It registers faintly in the back of my sleepy mind - the door sliding open and closed. Only one person on Enterprise knows the door code and would use it without chiming first. So it seems very ordinary.

It’s only when I feel his warmth against my skin as he slips into bed with me that I realize this isn’t ordinary at all.

After the incident with Section 31, Malcolm and I made sure we were on good working terms again. I couldn’t function as captain without implicit trust in my tactical officer, and the entire crew needed to know he had that trust.

On the personal level, it’s been harder to get back to where we were. I want him as my partner, my lover, my friend. I hope he wants the same, but finding our way has been hard. We’ve used words like sorry, apologize, love, and trust… but it still feels as though there’s a distance between us that wasn’t there before.

Tonight, having come to our bed for the first time since the breach, Malcolm lets his hands speak for him, touching me as if it were truly our first time… gentle, tentative at first, but becoming more confident, more demanding. More like himself.

I can tell he’s holding back, waiting... His eyes are dark and seem to plead with me. I whisper what I hope he needs to hear. “Let go, Malcolm. Let go of the guilt, the sorrow, everything. Just love me.”

And he does.
