“What the hell is wrong with her?” Tommy shakes his head in disbelief. The female doctor, Dr Lang, looks at him with sympathy in her eyes. She can see that Tommy is very worried about his wife. She had had a brief talk with Julia, after having been informed about her.
“Mr Walker, I’m not familiar with her entire medical past, but reading about what has happened to her over the last year, I think, that Julia has sort of compartmentalized her life. All her feelings are closed off and she only shows what, she thinks, that people will want to see.
She’s the dutiful wife and the caring mother in front of you. The understanding and helpful and brave patient to her doctors. The good daughter-in-law and the great sister-in-law. But once you walk out the door, once she’s alone, she just switches ‘off’, like a television switches off when you hit that red button on your remote…
We’ve monitored her in the interrogation room. We left her alone and she slumped away, her eyes staring in the distance, face blank… The moment someone would enter, she switched into another gear. Became instantaneously interested, worried, concerned, asking after her daughter, after you and… a certain Kevin?”
“My brother. Did she ask about Billy?”
“No. Not at all.”
“How can she say that he’s not her baby, but someone else’s?” Tommy wants to know. “How can she think that? I was there. She gave birth to him. …
“I think your wife is very distraught and has dealt with things by locking them away and moving on. But pretending that it didn’t happen and not dealing with your emotions won’t make it go away...”
“But they said she was alright, back in Kansas…?”
Dr Lang takes a deep breath.
“Mr Walker… She wouldn’t let anyone help her. She played it well. The psychiatrist was convinced that there was more, but …” Dr Lang shakes her head.
“Can I talk to my wife?” Tommy asks.
“You could… And I know that you have Max Carter’s approval too, but I would advise against it. Your wife is very angry, confused and lost, Mr Walker… And you are angry and concerned and emotionally worn out. Right now, after everything that has happened today, things can escalate beyond repair.
I’m not going to forbid you to go in there and talk to your wife. I know that you have questions and that you want answers…. Just consider that, maybe, this is not the right moment…” Tommy looks at Dr Lang and bows his head.
“I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m at the end of my rope..” He confesses.

By the time that Tommy and Kevin are back in Café 429, without having spoken to Julia, the family is already gone and they hear that Jordan is with the kids at Kevin and Scotty’s house. Tommy and Kevin eat their meal in the busy kitchen, plate on their knees, to keep out of the way of those working in the kitchen.
Neither is in the mood to talk and, as delicious as the meal is, that Scotty made for them, neither man is very hungry. Though Kevin isn’t willing to talk to Tommy, he’s glad when his phone rings and he sees Lena’s name on the display.
“Hi, Lena.”
“Kevin, I’m outside. I was wondering if I can talk to you. Alone.” She asks. Kevin looks at his half-eaten meal.
“Give me two minutes…” He answers. “I will be back… when I’m back…”
“Gonna finish this.” Tommy mumbles, lost in his own thoughts.
Kevin leaves by the back-door and finds Lena in front of Café 429, where he sits down next to her.
“What’s going on?” He asks upon seeing her serious face. Lena seems reluctant to answer and he can see that she carefully chooses her words.
“I… I’m very grateful for the opportunity that you’ve given me. New beginnings and such… But.. I’m not sure that I can do this… I mean… I’m hardly in the office and I’m already confronted with a kidnapping and I find myself in the house of my ex-lover, looking for his child, that I find in the basement….
I keep feeling that fear, that uncertainty. I was scared for a child that I never even met. And when Scotty pulled him out of the box… I can’t describe the look of total relief on his face and I can’t imagine what I must have looked like… It’s been an emotionally rollercoaster, Kevin, and I’m not sure that I can do this…
I remember when I met Rebecca again, years ago. I laughed at her story about how she found out that she was William’s daughter and all that it brought with it. The fights between your mother and hers and the seemingly never-ending drama…. It was fun to hear about… It was difficult enough to break away from it, once I got to know Tommy and Justin..
And I’m not sure that I have the strength to go through that once again. When I met my husband I was on top the world and I crashed very hard when he died… I want a job that I can go to and where I can just enjoy doing my work, without needing a session at the shrink at the end of the week.”
Kevin lets out the breath he’s been holding and he lets his head hang down. By the time he raises his head again, he manages a smile.
“It’s alright, Lena. I get what you’re saying. I’m sorry too. I was really looking forward to having you work for me… Listen…. First of all, I will pay for a day’s work. You’ve been amazing to say the least. You’ve done things that you didn’t have to do, but you did it anyway…. I’m grateful that you were here…. It’s been an emotional day. For all of us… C
an I make a suggestion? You don’t need to answer right now, just think it over…But how about… I give you two days to think this through. It’s hard enough to get a job these days. And I do believe that you were as anxious to start working from us and we were to have you work for us… W
hy don’t you go home and take a long hot shower, perhaps a glass of wine. Get a good night sleep…. And then…. I don’t know. I’m tired and I can’t think anymore. I just don’t want you to burn your bridges on an impulse. It’s been a long day… But I can guarantee you that not all days will be like that…. I wouldn’t survive it, if they were… Just… Don’t make a hasty decision, that’s all I’m asking….”

“So, what did she say?” Tommy asks.
“That I might be right and that she would let me know on Friday…” Kevin answers as he opens the door. He gets greeted by Jordan with a kiss on the cheek. Jordan and Tommy shake hands.
“Well, the kids are all in bed. I think that they all tried to be extra sweet tonight. Olivia gave Daniel his bath. I let Elizabeth give Billy the bottle. Mateo and Justin have put the air-mattress in Elizabeth’s room, as you asked and Mateo and I have made the bed, so you can sleep when you want…
I’ve put Billy in bed with Daniel. Daniel has been the sweetest, even allowing Billy to sleep Raffy. And you know what an honor that is.” Jordan grins, referring to the giraffe Raffy that is always in Daniel’s bed.
“Thank you, Jordan.” Tommy is genuinely grateful for everything that Jordan has done. “About payment for your work…”
“Don’t worry.” Jordan says. “I work the weirdest hours for Kevin and Scotty too and … if I’m here I’m free to raid the fridge, so my job comes with benefits…” He winks. Tommy can’t help but laugh.
“I’ll go and check on the kids.” Kevin says, hoping to catch one of his kids still awake.
“Go ahead. I’ll be waiting for you to come back.” Tommy and Kevin go upstairs and indeed find Olivia asleep. So are Daniel and Billy. And though Daniel has pushed Raffy close to Billy, but at the same time he holds Raffy tightly by the leg, to make sure that Billy won’t run off with him.
“Were we ever like that?” Tommy wonders.
“We should ask mom…. I do remember that, when I was afraid of the thunder, I would sneak into your bedroom and sleep with you….” Kevin reminds Tommy. Tommy has a guilty look on his face.
“I was always very glad you did… At least I wouldn’t feel so alone.. I was rather scared of the thunder too.” He confesses. Tommy and Kevin both start to laugh and they go to Elizabeth’s room, where Tommy stops.
“Kev, I don’t want to be rude, but I’m exhausted.”
“Yeah, me too. I will say goodbye to Jordan for you.”
“Thanks. And, Kevin,…” Tommy pulls Kevin closer for a hug and whispers. “Thank you for being there for me today….”
“I always am. I’m always here for you.” Kevin whispers back…

Scotty is glad to put his keys in the usual place and he sits down on the couch. He finds a little letter from Kevin on the table.
“Scotty, can you wake up Tommy when you come home? He took a sleeping-pill, but Billy will need his bottle tonight. Everything’s alright. Can’t wait for some alone-time with you though. I love you. K.”
Scotty smiles and hoists himself off the couch to go upstairs. In Elizabeth’s room he finds Tommy sound asleep. He goes to Daniel’s room, where he finds that Billy is already awake, just staring at the ceiling. He picks Billy up and quickly changes his diaper, glad that Kitty had thought to bring some with her.
“Let’s get some food into you.” Scotty tells Billy. He lets Tommy sleep, figuring that Tommy will need his sleep more than he does and he’s awake anyway. He warms up the milk and not long after that, he watches how Billy drinks, his hands on the bottle. He caresses Billy’s face.
“You have no idea how often I’ve wanted that I could have done this with Daniel, but I didn’t see him until he was a few months old…. It’s weird. The woman who gave birth to Daniel wanted him too much. The woman who gave birth to you doesn’t want you at all. It’s not fair… You’re so cute.”
He waits for Billy to finish. The little burp follows quicker than expected and then Billy nestles close to him. Scotty considers going back upstairs, but there’s something so peaceful about being on the couch, with the baby close against him. To listen how he breathes calm and at a steady pace. Scotty closes his eyes…

Tommy wakes up suddenly and without warning. He turns over and looks at the clock. Three-forty in the morning. Why he not been woken up by Scotty? He gets up and goes to Daniel’s room. He’s shocked to see that Billy’s place in the bed is empty. For a moment he feels sheer panic, but then it leaves again.
He goes downstairs where he quickly finds the solution to what happened. He finds Scotty asleep on the couch, with Billy, also in a deep sleep, on this chest,. Tommy can’t help but stare at Kevin’s husband for a moment, suddenly overwhelmed with gratitude that Scotty had found Billy after all.
“Scotty? Scotty, wake up!” Tommy gently shakes his brother-in-law’s arm.
“Whah???” Scotty manages only slowly to wake up.
“You fed Billy and fell asleep.”
“He was awake, when I got home. Thought I’d keep him quiet…” Scotty yawns.
“Go to bed and let me take care of my son.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean…” Scotty starts to apologize, but Tommy stops him.
“No, I’m the one who’s sorry. I took a sleeping pill, which I shouldn’t have done, but I did and, as a consequence, I wasn’t able to look after Billy. I’m glad that you did. I’m sincerely happy with that, but… Billy is my responsibility. Please, let me take that on my shoulders.”
“Naturally, I never meant to come between you two.” Scotty apologizes, feeling as if he done something wrong and Tommy can only smile.
“You didn’t. Scotty, you didn’t do anything wrong. I’m not mad or anything. I just want to look after my child and it’s not your job to do it. What you need to do is go upstairs and be with your husband….”
“If you need any help….”
“Go to bed, Scotty. I’m taking over…. Or rather, I’m taking responsibility.” Tommy corrects himself.
“If you’re sure?” Scotty mumbles and he hands the sleeping Billy over to Tommy. Tommy follows Scotty up the stairs and to Elizabeth’s bedroom.
He puts Billy on the air-mattress. Billy doesn’t even wake up. Hearing Scotty immediately go to his own bedroom, Tommy takes the opportunity to quickly go to the bathroom. He washes his face and drinks a bit of cold water. When he walks back to Elizabeth’s room, he can look into Kevin’s bedroom.
Scotty is asleep, his arm firmly wrapped around Kevin. Tommy checks on Daniel, who’s sleeping on his side, thumb in his mouth, arm around Raffy. Tommy smiles at the sight. He doesn’t look at Olivia and Mateo, feeling like he would trespassing on their privacy, if he did. He returns to Elizabeth’s room and closes the door behind him.
Suddenly the room is bathing in light, because Elizabeth turns on the lights.
“You scared me, baby.” Tommy whispers. Elizabeth looks at her little brother who’s sound asleep.
“We’re not allowed to close the doors.” Elizabeth says.
“Why not?”
“They squeak a bit and they’d wake us up in the middle of the night, when Kevin or Scotty comes to check on us. The only one allowed to keep his door closed is Mateo, but he usually keeps the door open as well.” She shrugs.
“I see. Well, in that case, I’ll open the door again.” Tommy grins at Elizabeth’s seriousness about breaking the rules and he immediately opens the doors again. He lies down on the airbed, on the right side of Billy. Elizabeth looks down on them, from her bed, before slipping out of bed herself and lying down on the other side.
She throws her comforter over herself and over Billy and lies close to him.
“No so close, baby. We have to give him room to breathe. Remember, he’s just a baby and he can’t defend himself.” Tommy reminds her. She nods and puts a little distance between herself and her brother, but not too much. Tommy turns out the light.
