CHAPTER NINETEEN

*****

In the two days that had followed the discovery of the diaries, it had seemed as if Kevin, Scotty and Justin had been holding their breaths, waiting for Tyler to finish the job of translating. And the more they tiptoed around her, the more quiet Tyler had seemed to become.

Just looking at all the entries she has managed to copy, she becomes nervous. She wishes that she’s wrong, that she has a made mistake, that what she’s been reading is just a misinterpretation of the facts, but she fears it isn’t. She fears Kevin’s reaction. She doesn’t believe that he will hurt her but someone is going to pay dearly, she fears.

She’s glad that Justin respects her decision to not let him read anything until Kevin has. Perhaps reading everything the way that Dryden had entered his data would make it more easier for Kevin to see it in some perspective… Ah, who is she kidding? Kevin will be livid! And Justin too!

“Hi, want something to eat?” Scotty asks, holding up a sandwich.
“You’re amazing.” She answers, gladly taking the food offered.
“How’s it come along? Not pressuring you. I can imagine it’s a lot of work, but… I’m worried about Kevin and how it will affect him…” Scotty seems a bit lost.

“I have no idea what will happen when Kevin reads all this. It’s such as mess… I don’t want to get to into details until Kevin gives his approval, but… someone is going to get hurt… All I can say is that I’m glad it won’t be Justin, you or me, because we had nothing to do with it all.”

“Do you have any idea when you’ll be ready? Just so I can emotionally prepare myself for the blow up?”
“I’d like to have it done by tonight. I’m sick and tired of reading what was on Dryden’s mind. I’m just glad he’s dead. So very, very glad, because I'm ready to kill him.,.”

Chad places his comb back on its place and whistles a happy tune. How much can life change in two days? After the long talk on the bench at the quay-side, in the middle of the night, he had gotten to know Jason so much better. It was as if he suddenly had a whole different husband.

He peeks behind the shower-curtain to have a look at Jason’s naked body. Jason hasn’t seen him, but Chad sure had enjoyed the quick view he got and he still grins when he returns to the bedroom. On the table are a couple of pictures and Chad picks them up. Jason looked so young then, 20 years ago.

Last night they had had dinner. Fish and chips on a bench in the middle of the park. It had felt weird, but he can see the reason why Jason feels like their room is bugged or something, because the McCallisters sure seem to know very well what is going on in their bedroom and it’s something that annoys Chad as well.

The upside to being a McCallister is that when they say to stop following them around, the paparazzi is indeed suddenly gone. Though Chad can still feel the occasional eyes on his back and he knows - like some second sense - that he’s still being watched, the gossip-press is not as intrusive as they used to be.

And privacy is what they both need. It had taken Jason quite some time to thaw, but when he finally started talking, there had been no way to stop him. For the first time he had started to talk about his past with Kevin. Chad had, at first, pretended not to know anything about Kevin.

If Jason’s feelings for Kevin were still so deep, there was no reason to tell him “I had a brief affair with him myself”, but when it became clear that Jason knew about his fling with Kevin, Chad been more relaxed as well. It somehow made it easier that Jason didn’t have to explain certain things or that Chad knew how good a lover Kevin was.

Chad’s fingers slide over Kevin’s face on the picture. Kevin had been nothing but a brief affair and he nor Kevin had ever believed it to be more, but he had always had good memories of Kevin and his honesty towards him. He hadn’t toyed with Chad, like others had.

He thinks back about what Justin had said about Scotty being with someone else. If that had indeed been Kevin then there was a good chance that Scotty was still in love with Chad. Chad stops for a moment, trying to figure out how he feels about that possibility. Of course, Scotty has no idea that Chad still has feelings for Scotty as well.

“Penny for thoughts?” Jason’s voice is warm and sweet. Chad smiles when he feels the gentle kiss on his shoulder.
“I was just thinking about … things…” He holds up the picture of Jason and Kevin and Jason frowns.

“Are you planning to travel?” He asks. And Chad catches his meaning. They have agreed not to share personal information in their bedroom anymore, but Jason wants to know if Chad still plans to leave for Wales to find Scotty. Chad bites his lip, thinking of an appropriate answer that wouldn’t give anything away.

“No. The stage-production doesn’t travel around. We’re staying in London.” He answers and Jason cannot help but feel relieved. Now that he has had a long talk with Chad, he suddenly no longer wants Chad to leave, especially not to go after Scotty.
“I’m glad. It will be great to have you home every night.” He says in return and he kisses Chad again.

When Tyler enters the kitchen the next day, she signals Justin and Scotty to leave, with a nod of her head. Justin and Scotty give each other a concerned look, but follow up on her non-spoken demand, so that she’s alone with Kevin, who sits up straight and looks at her with worry on his face.

“How bad is it?” He asks.
“I don’t know. I seriously can’t tell you how I feel about what I just read and what I discovered. My feelings have been all over the place, from anger to disbelief to a certain indifference about Dryden’s death, which worries me, because I’m usually not that indifferent.

I have it all saved here. Here are the diaries as well. I’ve left little post-it’s on those pages that talked about you and what was going on, so I could reference back to them. I’ve numbered the diaries, but … I guess you already guessed that from looking at them…. All I can do is let you read the entries Dryden made.”

Kevin takes the small laptop and looks at the first page. Nausea comes up and he breathes out slowly.
“I’ll get Justin and Scotty away from here for today. I think you should read this in peace and let it all sink in, without them breathing down your neck.” Tyler decides.

“Thank you.” She can hardly hear Kevin’s words. She can see that he’s scared for what he’s about to read and she gently squeezes his shoulder, before leaving the kitchen as well and leave Kevin alone to face his worst demon. She wonders if it is the right thing to do, but she also feels it must be done.

“We should have never left him.” Scotty moans several hours later. When they had come back home, Kevin had been nowhere to be found. From the tower-room to the cellars, they had looked everywhere and they know searching the woods surrounding the house would be just pointless, without a clue of where to look for him.

“Kevin won’t do anything stupid.” Tyler says, worried that she left him behind as well.
“How would you know? What do you know about Kevin anyway?” Scotty suddenly yells at her and Justin steps between Scotty and Tyler.
“I know you’re upset. I’m worried too, but Tyler is right. Kevin won’t do anything stupid.”

His words are calm and matter-of-factly and Scotty has to agree with Justin.
“I know. I’m so worried. I’m sorry, Tyler.”
“It’s okay. … I’m worried too. It was a wrong decision to leave him alone.”
“No. It wasn’t. It was what Kevin wanted as well.” Scotty has to admit it.

Standing in the middle of the kitchen, indecisive about their next action, they nearly jump up when they hear in the key in the lock. The door swings open and Kevin enters the kitchen.
“Kevin!” Without a word, Scotty almost throws himself in Kevin’s arms.

Kevin holds him tight and places a gentle kiss on his lips.
“Worried about me?” He asks with a little smile, Scotty nods, feeling rather silly now. “There’s no need to worry about me. I’m fine. I just needed some fresh air and I needed to clear my head.”

“How are you?” Tyler asks nervously.
“Confused. A bit in denial. I want you to be wrong with your translation of the diaries, but I don’t think you are…. But … I need more evidence. I still… don’t believe it… I need to understand and I can’t do that here.

So, I’ve decided, ... and if you three don’t agree with me, that’s fine, I’ll respect that, but it won’t change my mind… Scotty? Will you help me pack? ... I need to get back to where it all started... I need to know the truth.... So, I've decided that, first thing in the morning, I’m going back to London…”
