Last minute ingredients turned into a stop for coffee and screwing around in the lobby and even a game of elevator BINGO. By the time Chuck and Marcus returned to the apartment, the tiny blonde was as hopped up on caffeine as Marcus was on general mischief and birthday shenanigans. She was, in fact, running literal circles around him as he tried to open the door while juggling a shopping bag and a cup of still-hot coffee.
"Chuck...gimme a hand?"
The sound of rapid applause and her giggling could be heard from the foyer to the puca's city home.
"Pint-sized bitch."
"Gimme coffee."
"Don't drink it."
"Gimme coffee."
"Don't drink i--"
"LIAM!" Ah, the door had been opened and Marcus forgotten as Chuck ran into the living room and threw herself at the dark-haired boy. A cup of coffee was sacrificed to the floor gods in the process.
"Chuck...you tard." His coffee. His wonderful, so full of sugar it was almost syrup coffee. Soaking into the carpet.
Liam might have noticed Aunt Cait tsking as she took Marcus shopping back and headed to the kitchen for a) paper towels and b) a replacement cup of coffee. He might have paid attention to his Da giving his cousin a hug of greeting and best birthday wishes in murmured Gaeilge. Having a lap full of minute blond girl kissing his socks off, however, made focusing on anything else difficult.
"Hey, Pixie," he finally got out, still a little breathless from the kiss. Grinning up at Marcus, he added, "Happy belated birthday, dude. Mam sent along lemon meringue and dutch apple pies for later."
"She killed my coffee." That, Marcus grumbled as he hugged his Uncail Anrai and the pout came as Cait handed him a fistful of paper towels. "Make her clean it up."
"You didn't tell me you were coming." The tiny girl was giving Liam a pout of her own as she leaned back in his embrace. "I'm mad at you." Only she really didn't sound very convincing as Marcus forced the wad of paper products on her.
"You killed my coffee." Yet Marcus stooped down to mash the girl between himself and Liam as he hugged his cousin hello.
Liam hugged back, a huge grin still firmly in place. It didn't matter that he'd spent most of his summer with Marcus and Chuck. They were still two of his favorite people in the world, and any time he could spend with his girl and his cousin/brother/best friend was good times.
"No, I didn't tell you," he replied without letting go just yet. "It's called a surprise." He wasn't going to mention the other surprise next to him, deciding instead to wait until the little blonde noticed.
"It's called being mean to Chuck when she tells you how much she misses you and you don't tell her you are coming to visit." The paper towels get passed on to Liam. "It's your fault I killed the coffee."
Buck-passing. Fun.
Marcus, having let go of the other two and not wanting the towels back, has gone to investigate pie. "Aunt Laine didn't come with you?" His uncle gets a sadface for this. Then he also gets a hand gesture towards the lemon meringue pie carrier and a silent question of, "You with me in tearing into this bad boy RIGHT NOW?".
Fine, fine. He'll clean up the coffee spill, just not yet. "Are you telling me you don't like surprises, sugar? I'll have to figure out how to make it up to you then." Inside his carrier, Bagel makes a tiny noise as he picks up Chuck's scent, probably too tiny for his Pixie to hear while he's talking.
Marcus' silent question gets a slow nod and a cheerful smile from Da while he answers his spoken question as well. "I'm afraid not. A potential client looking for long-term boarding for several horses wanted to check the place out tomorrow, so your aunt thought it would be better if one of us was there."
As he speaks, Rory drifts into the kitchen, giving the pie a speculative look. Cait, sensing the impending mutiny, shakes her head and starts collecting plates.
Not being a well-versed cat person, Chuck doesn't even realize that Liam is sitting next to a cat carrier. She assumes it's just his carry-on bag. New, obviously. And no, she doesn't hear her Bagel's mew. "Surprises are not usually good things in my experience, no."
There were Marcus-grade surprises which tended to be on the entertaining side of horrifying, the pony in the elevator surprise that will NEVER be forgotten and then there were Snowflake-grade surprises that tended to make the Pixie want to die, so no, she was not fond of them.
"Oh. Well...mmm pie?" Because he didn't know what to say that wasn't 'work sucks'. "I'll call her later and say thanks."
Liam listens to his Pixie Girl, snuggling her all the while. You are getting more attention than pie, Chuck. Enjoy that.
"Maybe what you need is a better class of surprises," the Montana boy offers thoughtfully. "Like this one." Turning the carrier so that its door faces Chuck more directly, he smiles at the motorboat purr he can hear from inside and the little paw that pokes out, searching for the girl on his lap.
Given the quality of their hearing, the MacEibhirs in the kitchen are well aware of the impending high-pitched noises, trading smiles as they go about the vital tasks of pie distribution. Rory gets out a pie slicer and hands it to Cait (after running it through hot water to make sure the meringue doesn't stick), Anrai collects forks and Cait starts slicing.
And Marcus grabs his aunt's hand to guide those slices into larger wedges than she might have intended. "Chuck doesn't like meringue. She won't eat this."
He would like her to stop the nearly painful squealing though.
"BAGEL! Oooooooooh. Oh, my god you brought my god damned kitty with you!" Those may have been the words she screeched but they were so shrill it was hard to be certain.
She scooped up the orange puff of fur and rubbed her face against his back before kissing the tiny head and tucking him under her chin. "I missededededed you, Bagel."
Cait gently but inexorably removed Marcus' grip from her hand and shooed him away. "If she turns down her slice, you and Liam may split it. Until then, you can manage with a sixth of a pie." And the boy will only be sharing Chuck's slice with one other person instead of four, so hopefully he'll see the light.
Bagel gives off waves of contentment as he snuggles up against his girl's neck, and Liam basks in both that contentment and Chuck's obvious joy at the reunion. "He's missed you too, Tiny. He wasn't too pleased when I came back from Santa Barbara without you."
"Chuck, do you want a piece of pie that you won't eat?" He at least turned his head so he wasn't yelling in his aunt's ear. "Yo, bean sidhe, shut your cakehole a minute, yeah?"
Really, she was hurting his ears and Loopy was whining adding to the pain.
"How could you tell?" This, Chuck asks Liam between more squeals and kisses before yelling back at Marcus. "I want it just so you can't have it, asshat."
"Charlene..."
"Marky, Marc..."
"You are such a..." Okay, he wasn't going to say it with his elders all standing there with him in the kitchen. Stupid Chuck."
"You looooooooooooooove me." Yes, they carried on like this ALL the time.
Verrrrry good idea to avoid the b-word whilst standing next to your Aunt Cait, Marcus. Wise of you.
While his aunt plates the pie, Liam answers Chuck. "He spent an awful lot of time prowling the house and sniffing for you. And then he'd come sit on my feet and give me this disapproving kitten look."
Bagel is anything but disapproving now. Even with Loopy on the floor in front of them, he's purring away and flexing his kitten feet.
He was actually going to use a words that rhymes with a stor, but well...
"Is you my good kitty, Bagel? Is you? You am." Chuck babbled and kissed the kitten for being good enough to miss her the last few weeks or so. "You am the bestest kitty evar." And then she looked at Liam. "You're pretty okay too."
In the kitchen, Marcus was back to hovering over his aunt, standing behind her and hooking an arm around her shoulders. "You know you're my favorite person, right?"
