I thought the Watchmen film was OK, seeing the comic used pretty much as a shooting script for large chunks was unsettling at times, gratifying at others. I thought Rorshach, in particular, was note perfect. The one big change to the plot was understandable - having the events on the secret island would have added a good fifteen minutes to what was already an overlong film. The one thing I was really unhappy about was the change in the way that Dan and Laurie go after the dust settles - they shouldn't want to go back to doing that stuff.
On the whole, it just demonstrated that it was not a story that could fit into a theatrical length movie. All the incidental characters that were left out removed part of the point of the comic, putting these costumed heroes into a world of real people. I'll hold my judgement until I see the extended DVD version - reinstating the Black Freighter will obviously mean at least some of those other characters get some screen time. Without them, the piece lacked a great deal of heart.
