Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car

Oct 29, 2008 15:19

We had a GM prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell car being shown at the school today to various science classes. I have to admit it's pretty slick. It has 0 emissions and only produces nitrogen and water (though I couldn't pin the GM guy down on how much of a "footprint" it produces to make these things). They're partners with Shell so they have a Hydrogen station up in White Plans. For a comparable "gallon" of gas it would cost $8. However on 4.6 of whatever unit he was using (grams? I don't remember) you can go for 200 miles(though if you were caught out somewhere you couldn't fuel up...you're screwed). Also the car was WHISPER quiet. Like spooky I sneak up on you and you don't even know it quiet (might make for more accidents until people get used to such a thing...though he said past 30 MPH most of the noise is from the tires/wind). You turn it on and it's instantly ready. Pretty nifty. They are training mechanics to work on the car, but for right now if something goes wrong only engineers will be able to help you out. Maybe I'll be able to get one some day when the infrastructure is in place and it's cost efficient.

Be well.
