I highly recommend listening to this Scott McClellan interview on Fresh Air.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91061991 My thought on the Republican Regime has always been that it is an organization of nincompoops. Sinister, lying, shitty nincompoops, but nincompoops nonetheless. McClellan more than proves it. This is worth pointing out because so many people I know have spoken of the Bush Administration as if they are omnipotent, a dark force which can read our minds and anticipate all strategies. It's true, they did tap peoples' phones, fabricate evidence, haul innocent men to prison, and generally abuse their power for their own agenda. But these are strong-arm tactics. Stupid people can do these things, too.
There is one moment in his interview where he talks about the day the media discovers Rove's involvement in the Plame affair. Historically, this is known as a turning point, the moment when the press officially stopped feeling so tolerant towards Bush's many lies. But it was McClellan who had the job of acting as the stop-gap, and it was by all accounts incredibly humiliating for him. Afterwards, Rove apologizes to McClellan for having to bare the brunt of the assault. If you imagine Rove laughing maniacally and stroking his black handlebar mustache at leaving the Press Secretary to twist in the wind, you're wrong. By McClellan's account, it was more like that awkward moment in high school where someone gets a note in their locker: "ARE WE STILL GOING STEADY? CHECK YES OR NO."
My point is for future reference. It's a disservice to ourselves when we ascribe super-human abilities to conservatives. They're only human.
