Aug 27, 2010 14:54

TITLE: Easier To Lie
AUTHOR: marciafan
CHARACTERS: Jenny Shepard, Jethro Gibbs
GENRE: Angst
RATING: K+
SUMMARY: So much was left unsaid, so many memories they never spoke of, so many secrets between them. Demons they had learnt to live with. JIBBS. Back in the day.
WORD COUNT: 488
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Very angsty, and I don't really know whether it's OOC or not. I may have lost my touch after straying away from the fandom for so long. So I apologize if it does come off as very OOC. Last time I checked, English still wasn't my first language and this wasn't beta'd. Therefore, Microsoft Words and I are to blame for all grammar mistakes and imperfections.
DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of these characters, nor am I making money out of this. If I were, I'd be rich by now. And I sure would like to own Gibbs. Just sayin'.

"You okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine."

However, she wasn't. Not nearly as fine as she pretended to be. It had been a damn close call, they hadn't even considered an ambush, no reason to suspect their covers had been blown or that they would encounter hostile fire. So they had been completely unprepared when the shots had started to ring in the dim-lit warehouse where the meeting was supposed to take place.

It had been a distraction, fumbling with their concealed weapons for a fraction of a second too long, and they barely made it out alive, with scratches, bruises, and a bullet hole in Jenny's shoulder.

She had been awfully in pain on the way back to the safehouse, but the wound was clean and the bullet had gone right through without touching anything vital, so painkillers and a bandage would do.

"How about you?" Jenny turned to look at her partner, and what she saw on his face made her heart clench. It was the same expression, the same look in his eyes that she had seen hours before, when she was shot and the blood started seeping through her blouse. He had looked genuinely concerned - terrified, almost - and she couldn't help but wonder whether there was something he wasn't telling her.

Then again, of course there must be something he wouldn't tell her. She had secrets herself, dark demons that haunted her nights, goals that she needed to reach before she could fully move on. Things she kept thinking about while she covered with Jethro, risking her life, and all her mind could conjure up was a memory of what she needed to avenge.

Jethro took his time to answer, fussing around the bed she was laying on - not quite avoiding her, but not entirely exposing his emotions to her, either.

As he opened his mouth to answer, Jenny grabbed his hand, squeezing it gently for a second.

"Yeah, I'm okay too." He growled, his voice low and gruff. And even though the look of barely concealed despair in his eyes, and the frightening coldness of his hand said otherwise, Jenny accepted the answer and kept any further consideration to herself.

She didn't know what Jethro had been thinking while they were getting enemy fire. She didn't know whether his mind had been all business or if part of it had wandered to places she wasn't even aware existed. But if his mind had indeed strayed to almost forgotten memories, or to business that he was afraid would be left unfinished, she suspected that she would never know; because she knew that she would never ask him.

They both had their own secrets, and their own haunted memories to deal with, of that she was sure.

And she knew that sometimes, it's much easier to lie.

THE END

And honestly
to look you in the eye
it's easier to lie
