Darkness.
The sound of his footsteps was almost deafening in the silence of the warehouse.
He stopped and tried to listen for any noise, any sound that would let him know where she was. He needed to know she was fine.
But all he could hear was silence. All around him, taking his breath away, pressing on his chest, crowding him.
He hadn’t wanted her to be the bait. It was dangerous and she was not enough experienced. And now the contact was lost and all he knew was he may never see her again.
A light flickered ahead of him and he instinctively tightened his grip on the gun in his hand, starting to run towards the light even after it disappeared again.
Silence.
Broken by a scream.
A gunshot.
A whimper.
His shoulder collided with the heavy wooden door but the pain was forgotten as soon as he saw her.
“Jen…”
When she turned around, tears were streaming down her face.
“He’s dead, Gibbs… I killed him.”
Her sobs soon echoed in the small, dark room as shock overwhelmed her.
He re-holstered his gun and took the gun away from her.
Pulling her close, trying to stop her body from shaking.
Just holding her tight as she let it all out.
Because he knew none of his rules could teach her how to react when she killed someone for the first time.
