School starts in two days, and I'm getting nervously excited. I can't wait to see how it's going to go!
Today, Will had his 18-month check up with his doc. It went well! The doc said that Will's got a great vocabulary. He said most kids his age only say between 12-24 words, but Will says almost 50, so he's got as big a vocabulary as most average 2-year-old kids. I guess all that reading to him and taking him to the library for story time pays off after all, eh? We talked about the evils of TV, and I said that I think you can get even more vocab building with music (listening to CDs), reading aloud to him, and saying nursery rhymes. He agreed. Sounds like we're doing the right thing with not letting Will watch TV. To me, there's nothing good about sitting a kid in front of a TV. The marketing, especially, is nauseating. Talk about not wanting your kids to get sucked into stuff... just let them watch TV, and they'll want every damn toy on the market, not to mention the McDonald's Happy Meal toys and all the grease that accompanies them. No thanks. I think Will's doing great without all that nonsense. And his doctor agrees heartily. Hurray!
I had the hardest time sleeping last night. I stayed up till about 1, and then tried sleeping on the futon, but had trouble relaxing. I got at at about 6:45, but got in bed with Aric and slept until 7:50. Ugh. Our day has been off ever since. I got to the gym almost an hour late, and subsequently was late (a little) to Will's doctor's visit. We got through it though. Then we went to Stanford to go to the library, and Will was pissed that I wouldn't let him take all the lovely books off of the shelves there. It was his first time at Greene Library, if I recall correctly. I felt conspicuous walking around campus with my little guy. I was the only person I saw with a stroller. But the library staff said that a lot of grad students have kids and occasionally have to bring them to the library with them. So I didn't feel like I was breaking the rules by having him there. Phew! You never know. A lot of people are hostile toward children. I hate that, but it's the truth. The one thing that sucked is that I had two books to return to the library that I forgot to take with me. So I'll have to make another trip to drop those off. Bummer. I try to make my trips out of town as efficient as possible, and it sort of is aggravating when I forget something and have to make another 15-mile trip. Oh well. At least it's only 15 miles instead of the 36 miles to Oakland.
Well, I'm going to sign off and try to eat a little lunch before Will wakes up from his nap.
