Fandom: Burn Notice
Subject: Fiona Glenanne/Michael Westen
Title: Safe From Harm
Warnings/Notes: no standard warnings apply

Burn Notice is a show about a CIA spy who is burned by people he doesn't know. Stuck in Miami, the spy is hellbent on trying to find who burned him, with the help of the only people in the information community that will talk to him. And his mother.

Michael Westen is that spy. And until he can get back in the CIA, he becomes an unlicensed private investigator. He also has to deal with his issues with his mother and his ex-girlfriend, who has appeared in Miami because he was found beaten up and passed out in a hotel room.

Fiona Glenanne is that ex-girlfriend. The two used to work together in Ireland. She's only there in Miami because he didn't change his emergency contact information. She stays to help Michael with his burn notice, although she's really in Miami for other things. While she waits, she does odd jobs, legal and illegal: bounty hunting, gun running, helping people out with problems they can't go to the police with.

This is their story.

1. Joan Jett: "Bad Reputation"

A girl can do what she wants to do and that's what I'm gonna do

An' I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation
Oh no, not me

In need of a CIA asset, Michael meets Fiona (as Irishman Michael McBride), a former member of the IRA, at the Black Sand Pub in Dublin. He's warned by the patrons there that she's troublesome. He doesn't care. He asks her to dance; she pulls a gun on him. He's able to get her to put the gun down so they can dance.

2. Madonna: "Forbidden Love" (Confessions on a Dance Floor version)

Forbidden love.
Are we supposed to be together?

Forbidden love.
We seal our destiny forever.

Michael isn't supposed to fall in love with Fiona. But he does. And she falls in love with him.

3. Elliott Smith: "Everything Reminds Me Of Her"

I never really had a problem because of leaving
But everything reminds me of her this evening
So if I seem a little out of it, sorry
But why should I lie, everything reminds me of her

Together the two do all sorts of jobs on the CIA's dime. Then Michael's cover is blown. At first Fiona's irate that Michael lied to her about his identity, but she forgives him. Then Michael's taken out of Ireland because of the blown cover. He never gets a chance to say goodbye to Fiona.

Michael uses his relationship with Fiona as a cautionary tale to his (womanizing) Navy SEAL friend, Sam, whenever they meet up between their jobs.

Then Michael gets burned. The people he'd thought he'd never see again--Sam, his mother, Fiona--reappear in his life.

4. James Blake: "Life Round Here" (original)

Part time love is the life round here
We're never done

Michael and Fiona's relationship is officially not over.

It takes a while for them to start up their relationship again. The two have trust issues from their past. But after a couple of years, they leap back into their relationship routine like nothing happened.

5. Massive Attack: "Safe From Harm"

But if you hurt what's mine
I'll sure as hell retaliate

But if either one of them is in immediate danger, you can bet they'll try to save each other. They're willing to die for each other, even. Just don't be That Person (or occasionally That Thing) who threatens Michael's or Fiona's life.

6. Anthem Lights: "This I Promise You" (*NSYNC cover)

I've loved you forever, in lifetimes before
And I promise you never, will you hurt anymore
I give you my word, I give you my heart (I give you my heart)
This is a battle we've won
And with this vow forever has now begun

A series of unfortunate events impacts not only Michael's friends, but his family. Once Michael claws his way into the good graces of the CIA again, he makes a promise to Fiona that he'll leave the CIA after everything between him and the CIA's resolved.

7. Miley Cyrus: "Wrecking Ball"

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me

But after his friends and mother are arrested by the CIA (as a result of the series of unfortunate events), he takes a CIA job to save them all, breaking his promise to Fiona.

Fiona finds a new boyfriend. Michael comes back into her life after months away because of said CIA job. As a result, Fiona is conflicted between staying with her new boyfriend or restarting her relationship with Michael. Tired of her indecision, Fiona's boyfriend leaves her.

8. Justin Timberlake: "Mirrors"

Comin' back here to you once I figured it out
You were right here all along

Michael feels like getting Fiona back into his life is a lost cause. He gets more involved in his CIA job. But when the job almost consumes him, Fiona risks her life to help him snap out of his funk. Two things happen. One: the two of them realize they were meant to be. Two: Michael decides he finally wants out of the spy business.

9. The Cinematic Orchestra: "That Home"

This is a place where I don't feel alone
This is a place that I call my home

The only way the two can escape the CIA is for them to fake their deaths. Michael's last job involves a devastating kill switch explosion in Downtown Miami that blows an entire building up, and Fiona's with him. How convenient!

The two are able to escape the building before the explosion can get to them. With Michael's orphaned nephew in tow, Fiona and Michael escape to Ireland, where they first met, to start a new life together.
