Ooh, those are both instruments I want to learn, the pennywhistle and the guitar. I figure a pennywhistle would be a great backpacking instrument: small enough to just slip in the pack for a week long trip with neglible more weight carried.
Hmm... I am not very familiar with the instrument, but I am pretty sure it is pretty darn similar to the clarinet (with which I am familiar), and so I would think there would be pretty much only one (obvious) way to hold it that would allow you to really make noise. So it could be that you are just holding it too tightly and need to just relax your hands somewhat.
Of course, what do I know? I have not seen the instrument, or you attempting to play it, so could be completely wrong.
Well there's no reed, but teeth touching it screws up the vibration patterns, and affects the sound quality. And it is sturdy, but I'm a klutz and as such I am paranoid about dropping anything I hold.
