when to start bottles

Anya and I just got back from the pediatrician's office, where we learned that she has already gained a pound and a half (in just over 2 weeks).  The pediatrician, who is also a lactation consultant, was very pleased.  But, she said I should start pumping / trying bottles now.  I asked about waiting 4 weeks to avoid nipple confusion, and she told ( Read more... )

I imagine every baby is different, but with my first he had to get a bottle at just 8 days old when I had very unexpected emergency surgery. He transitioned between bottle and breast just fine with no latch issues at all.

With Raymi she's had latch issues from the beginning and my LC actully had me switch her to a bottle (she was 3 weeks old I believe) to try and correct her latch by training her on the bottle.

The key is to buy a very wide based nipple, the breastflow ones are the ones I have used with both my children.

Raymi's latch has improved in the sense that she now takes in more of my nipple which is what e were shooting for but hasnt correcting the popping on and off nonstop thing which she also does with a bottle. The bottles definitely have not hindered us at all though.

Again all babies are different but I really dont think introducing bottles is going to kill anything. If you notice it changing her nursing/latch then just stop for a while and try again later with the bottles. I dont think its a give the baby one bottle and it ruins their latch for life type deal considering its a learning process I imagine it would be a gradual change if it did happen. that being said I would start slow with maybe 1 bottle a day and then increasing when you know it isnt messing anything up.
