I've got a few drafts of short stories---deciding that while I'm working my full time day job, I will be able to tinker with short stories rather than tackle a full blown novel right away.... Hopefully, this is a good decision for a few reasons: I won't have to worry about losing track of a train of thought in the novel (where there are infinitely more trains than in a short story!), and perhaps more importantly, it will give me exposure in the right circles.
Anyway, I've been intrigued by a few different ways to present these short stories. I could just do the normal---write and submit to publications, and hope my name gets called. Takes about 6 months there, from submission to publication....not that I'm impatient (I'm not going anywhere), but at the same time, I think I would like some feedback sooner than that.
I've been reading up on hypertext stories, too. Could be interesting....describe a character, there's a link to a short anecdote about the character. Describe a place, there's a link to a map/picture and a bit of relevant history. Gives me an opportunity to both expand and share my worlds, as well as the reader freedom to experience my writing as in depth as they would like...if they just want to "cut to the chase," or they, too, are interested in more detail about a specific topic, it's just a click away!
Brandon Sanderson is doing something quite interesting on his website currently--maybe some of you have checked it out. He's writing a novel (that will later be published by Tor), and showing the drafts and progress of this story to anyone who wants to view it. I'd love to do something like that....but the problem is, he has an audience, and I've got nuthin'!!!
So, any comment would be appreciated....think the short story is a way to start? Would people be interested in hypertext? Would it be worth it to write stories for the general public, even though I have no audience??
