So, news.
For a while now I've been talking with my dad about one of the side ventures he's involved with. Specifically, he is in a company working on green energy, recycling and (most particularly) waste-to-energy processes. And there might just be a spot for me in that company. We've been negotiating about that for a little while, since it's tricky when your dad is in a position of authority and would be your boss (or close to it) no matter what.
Well, an opportunity came up. And on Sunday morning I'm flying out to Chicago with one of his coworkers for what has become some wacky hybrid of business trip, audition and interview. We are investigating technologies we think can be adapted, and my job is to keep my eyes open, wield a camcorder, keep my mouth shut (it's classified stuff) and see whether I like the field in general. I think I do, but one of the things I've always fretted about is that you don't get to demo a job first, and I'm glad to be getting that opportunity.
In the meanwhile, I'm frantically packing. I've only been on an airplane once since 9/11. Thus I have had to do a fair bit of research on the new regulations. I mean, they charge you to check luggage now? Yeah, that is news to me; that's kind of the point.
I'm also scrambling with bandstuff. We have finally hit the jackpot on the topic of alto candidates. Margie's friend Erin got us one, and then I corralled two from SCU's church choir, and a flyer on Craigslist has turned up a grand total of five responses, two of whom have actually replied to my follow-up. (Well, actually, three, but that third is giving birth in six weeks and, quite understandably, found that her schedule is not conducive to ensemble-ing.) I would use initials, but by some absurd coincidence there is a Catherine, a Katherine, a Kristen, a Diana, a Donna and a Dani. Oh, and a Lisa, just for odd woman out. Diana came to practice earlier this week to try out, and I'm trying to get the two Craigslist responders in this coming week. Even better, Interrobang actually has gigs coming up, weekend after this one. I don't think we'll have a new alto by that time, but it does mean we're a bit discombobulated and running around trying to get a thousand things done at once. In particular, I needed to get everything lined up before I leave on Sunday, because once I'm in Chicago I don't know how quickly or effectively I can coordinate... and my flight lands four hours before practice begins.
It's a busy time.
