Fandom: The Hunger Games Title: eat your heart out Rating: T for violence, cannibalism Words: 2,500 Disclaimer: I don't own anything, Suzanne Collins does Summary: Two defining moments of a boy named Titus.
So after seeing you around my part of the fandom, I came over to see if there'd be any interesting fic to be found here. And look, I was right. :)
I found the anecdote of Titus so curious in the books and so I immediately clicked on this. This fic was just the right amount of icky, I loved it. I love the mundane way you handle the eating of the dog and of people (and it would make so much sense to get from this to that) - "We ate him for supper that night.", "when I decided to eat people." That way of writing that trope can get funny by accident fast, but here it was just creepy. Add to that the wonderfully explicit descriptions of eating the eyes and how Titus' eating Sara was both such an act of barbarism and a childish need for revenge because she'd tripped his sister. Really well-done.
Sorry I'm just getting to this. I just got back from a school trip.
See, I've done the same with you and others around here except instead of hunkering down and actually reading your fic, I add them to my always-growing reading list. 'Moss on the Ruins' is haunting me in my sleep.
My heart went out for Titus. It's so upsetting that he's apparently remembered as the crazy cannibal when the Capitol should be blamed for forcing him into conditions where his resulting behavior was just disturbingly primitive and his mental state was that under extreme stress. I didn't want to excuse his actions but I definitely wanted to show that the Capitol had a huge part in what he became in the arena.
And, hee! I see you've found one of my shorter fics. Certainly a quicker read than MOTR, that one.
I've always thought Kat's narrow world view is both a strength and a problem of canon. On one hand, it does give us a clear idea about how a boy like Titus would be viewed, about what life is like for people like Haymitch and Finnick who're dismissed by Kat also. But on the other hand, it makes it easier to dismiss him after that little mention like she does. You're right, of course, that his case shows exactly how awful and terrible the Games have to be for the children involved - the majority of them would be so much less able to handle the arena than the ones who emerge as victor in the end.
It was! Now I'm catching up online because my school was cancelled today.
GOAL: I WIL READ AND REVIEW MOTR BY THE END OF THE WEEK. Because it does look really good. I've seen you and deathmallow discuss interesting topics featured in both your stories so I'm guessing your fic is just as in-depth and thoughtful as hers.
Very true, about Katniss' narration. It reflects how real and flawed she is, which is a nice device to show her develop as her worldview changes, but then she'll miss or even dismiss something and then it's just plain annoying because we miss out on the most of characters like Titus, Annie, Haymitch, etc.

YAY for plans to read MOTR! I'm all in favor of that. :D
I personally like millari's bit of backstory in which Haymitch learned knife fighting in school when he was defending himself against bullies. Yes, absolutely, to how a tribute without any skills would be much more likely to freeze or panic - they wouldn't have a reason to hope at all.
