(( WARNING FOR HUGE TEXT DUMP, NATCH.
Mostly so that everyone has a CLUE who this character is in terms of the YGO-verse, this is also a note concerning ReiYoku characters in general; it's VERY unlikely that any other ones (Shou has an account too) will have accounts here, unless there's this huge demand or something... BUT, at the same time, so that people have a clue who I'm talking about, I'll probably be putting images with some info on it on this account, in an OOC box... Mostly because the other characters kinda concern Yume here quite a bit. :I ANDDDDD the history kinda concerns them. A lot.
AU Info specifically is going to be in another post, don't worry~ ))
Fun fact- the hieroglyphs in the icon read 'NRD'... Nerd. (Egyptians didn't have the letter 'E' on its own.) Even better though is that her knowledge tends to cover the Earth's history in general as a part of her 'love'.
Name: Yume Kaiba
Alias: Yume Souryuu (This is the name she goes by currently)
Tag Names: 'Erebus'- The Greek God of Darkness, it's thought to also be the name of the darkened realm between earth and hell. She will also, however, be tagged with her name... Since it won't likely be doubled. Ever.
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Occupation: University Student (working on a Bachelors in Ancient History) - 'Doctor' (AU term, has nothing to do with Tardises or hospitals.)
Personality: Almost Jonouchi-like as a child, the events known as 'Black Rain' would have an extremely traumatic effect on Yume, an effect which she only now is recovering from. A rather quiet person by nature, she tends to be extremely goal oriented, disliking distractions or wasting time. She was once considered quite the stick in the mud because of this- if she isn't working on something for the college she'll be working on something for her job as a doctor, and if she wasn't doing that she would typically have been dealing with something else that would be considered 'mundane'. Thanks to recent 'friendships' however, she's beginning to come out of her shell again. She's having less nightmares of past events (which were so harrowing that she would take medication to induce a dreamless sleep), and she's learning that not everything must be dealt with alone. She cannot dwell on the past, or on any honor she's 'lost'...
But at the same time, it will likely be quite a while before she returns to her family to tell them she's alive...
Truthfully, her stoniness is a result of her own fear. She is deathly afraid of another 'Black Rain' occurring, and doesn't want to get close enough to anyone that it happens to such a traumatic extent again. ...Her friends, however, refuse to let that happen.
Appearance: Standing at about 5 foot eight, Yume has a fairly slim build, with little on her chest and only slightly more for her hips. Preferring to keep her black-brown hair short, she's inherited her great-grandfather Mokuba's eyes, and has a tendency to dress in long-sleeved sweaters or shirts with tight-fitting jeans. She's typically seen carrying her bag with her, which contains her laptop and glove, the latter of which is just as likely to be seen on her left arm as well. The Glove in question acts as a multi-purpose device outside its typical use concerning the realm of the 'dream';
- 'Dream': As clothing tends to change in the realm of the 'dream' (Which is in fact, the 'Shadow Realm') for those who are protected by their shadow, Yume obviously has a set herself. While within the 'Dream', she takes an appearance similar to the French 'Musketeers of the Guard' from the 1660s; her clothing is considerably more body-hugging though, and almost all the fabric is in a varying shade of black. The only real exception is the feather on her hat, and her mask, which is faceless and porcelain.
Her weapon in the realm is a long claymore blade, which she wields in one hand.
It's unknown why her outfit is French in origin though; her shadow comes from Northern American myth.
Shadow's Description: A creature whom Yume shunned since his initial awakening through the 'Locksmith', the shadow she holds is in fact one of six well known Trickster Gods, who had each been sealed against their will within a bloodline when they refused to uphold the agreement between the races of Shadow and the races of Light (also known as Man.). As forcefully sealed beings, they were often unaware of the outside world until release; as a result, 'Raven', as he was once called, immediately attacked and destroyed all in sight once he 'awoke'.
Because of this reaction, Yume has been consciously suppressing and separating herself from her shadow to the point where there is even a gap between their souls, which allowed the spirit 'Reynard' to slip in to act as a 'barrier' against Raven's negative power. As a shadow that's locked away, 'Raven' isn't actually seen... However, his power manifests in the form of liquid 'shadow', drawn up by Yume from within the 'Dream' to melt in and out of the scenery. However, this ability comes from merely existing...
Abilities: Yume draws on very little of the Raven's power for fear that he'll 'wake up' and do just what he did last time, but with Reynard acting as barrier she's slowly mastering more of the shadow's power. As the Trickster representing 'shadows', there is of course the 'melt' that Yume already utilizes constantly. However, with Reynard's aid she can also manipulate the shadows from her feet into simple forms, such as temporary barriers for herself and those nearby. Even more recently she's managed to manipulate this further, 'throwing' shadows from her blade, or stretching it into a 'whip' mid swing to attack enemies. These abilities, of course, can only be used within the realm of the dream, or something similar.
Backstory: (LONG) Born almost 100 years after the end of the Ceremonial Battle, Yume entered the world just as shadows were beginning to re-awaken. As the fourth generation in the adopted Kaiba line, she had the rare fortune of having her Great-Grandfather survive...
Sadly, Mokuba would be quick to comment on her resemblance to the girl's Great-Great Uncle, the presumably deceased Seto Kaiba... Who had gone missing when Mokuba was scarcely twenty. This note, along with a note on her rather impressive intelligence from a young age, would have a negative effect; from as early as three, she would grow up constantly being told of how much she resembled the former CEO, about how he was the one who inspired the family's symbol of the 'White Dragon', of 'this' of 'that...
By the time she was five she would be sick of it- her family wasn't the one running the company right now regardless, her cousin's was. In fact, it was at that time that her cousin, having recently unlocked his shadow 'Gragonith', chose to develop and create what would be called 'The Glove'...
While Yume, by this point in school, was proving herself as Mokuba's descendant. Intelligent as she was, she deliberately rebelled against the tales her parents and relatives were telling her. They wanted her to be realistic, thinking of the future? She lived for the moment, burying herself in fairytales and myths and loving every bit of it! They wanted her to get good grades? Pah! She'd go so far as to skip her classes. They wanted her to be polite, or at least quiet and thoughtful of things? Then she would just do whatever she wanted!
And yet all it did was get even more stories and even more comparisons- now they would berate her for not following in that path, or even 'at the very least, learning from your cousin!'
She was caught in a hole. She was used to doing whatever she wanted by this point- while her grades from the times she stayed in the classroom were incredible she continued to walk around outside school hours, regardless of what others said. And finally, one day in Middle School when she was being chased down for skipping classes again she managed to slip into a fenced enclosure... Which.. Happened to be someone's property.
Not that young Yume cared, as she shimmied up the nearest tree and hid in the room beside it until she couldn't hear the people chasing her any more. She'd thought the room was empty... As it turned out however, it wasn't, and it was with baited breath that she hid behind the bed when someone came in to check on the blond girl on it. The girl's mother thought she heard a noise-
'It's nothing,' the girl rather calmly told her. 'Just the wind.'
The girl's name was 'Mutou Kimi'. She was a very frail girl, suffering from a disease that left her bed ridden. However, she had very little to do throughout the day it seemed- so the two girls came to an agreement, in that Yume would visit her each day and talk for an hour or so.
It was around this time that a device known as the 'Locksmith' was developed. Conversations of the debate concerning the device arose all about the pair, and as a result they themselves wound up wondering what both sides added to the answer. The Locksmith, developed by a self-employed inventor, was a machine that could awaken a shadow without the negative effects or situations that ordinarily would. It would allow people to awaken their shadows and grow with them, or even just see them before they passed on. On the one hand, people were thrilled.
On the other there were those, such as the Kaiba family and Kimi's own, which heartily disagreed. Shadows awoke for a reason; to force it was foolish.
But Yume saw another gem in this- and, combining her desire to shut her parents up about this 'Seto Kaiba' they compared her to, while still gaining 'honor' of her own, she told Kimi her plan. Her fourteenth birthday had just come; she wouldn't need her parent's permission to use the machine that was in use at their local city center. She would go to use the Locksmith and awaken her shadow... And her hopes were that this shadow, as something from her family line, would be a monster of light to rival even this 'Blue Eyes' that represented her family.
Kimi wasn't sure. But Yume was good at convincing. And so a few days later the pair would slip out to go to their building...
There were two locksmith devices there. People were lined up and walking forward, placing their hands on the sphere on the device before releasing, in a burst of energy tied to their element, their shadow. Small dragons began to fill the room, with fairies, soldiers, and creatures of all kinds joining their partners. Yume and Kimi were next; Kimi's sphere began to release a great and blinding light, seemingly healing anything it touched..!
But a mere moment after touching hers, Yume felt something was wrong... She was thrown back by a wave of darkness, and a monster, long and cloaked in black rotting feathers with a toothed beak and leering eyes came into the air. The building became ruined, and with a screech the monster began devouring all in sight. Screams filled the air, people ran... But none escaped. Kimi reached out, right in front of her...
Yume ran and the shadow followed. She ran until the shadow faded into her feet, and she locked herself in the room without saying a word to her parents. Moments later she would begin packing a bag... Police would arrive at the door, and her mother would call upstairs for her, but with the same skills she used to slip into Kimi's home she slipped out of hers. She caught the nearest subway and never looked back...
Someone helped her, for some reason. Someone helped her hide even when posters asking where she was began to appear, and as the years passed the traumatized and guilt ridden girl grew into a woman that no one linked to the missing girl any more. A woman who spent the last number of years determined to awaken her friend whose soul was devoured by her own, putting all her time into schooling, work, and training both...
But by the time she was sure of herself, and by the time she was accepted into the ranks of the 'unbeatable', the Doctors upon whom 'winning' meant the lives of themselves and those they were treating... The hospital of the victims of what became known as 'Black Rain' died, all but one...
And Kimi... She was gone.
Yume would graduate from High-School soon after this, pursuing a degree in Ancient History due to her interest in mythology and shadows both; by this point she would find alarming similarities between the two, going so far as to ironically take a belief similar to Seto Kaiba's and adopt it in her own way. Magic and the supernatural didn't exist- it was merely a name for the unknown sciences of the world. At the same time, she would continue her work as a doctor, trapping 'unbound shadows' in objects to sell on the underground for further funding... Eventually, after meeting a shadow named Reynard and a boy named Shou, she would stop this... And as she makes other friends, she's slowly loosing the despairing way of existence she once held. But despite this, she still has a long way to go...
And it's likely that if she finds Kimi again, it'll take just as long to recover from what occurs in that meeting as it will to recover from what she deals with now...
By this point in time, a number of events that have yet to be written in book/fanfic form have happened to Yume. (And, given time constraints, I'll be summing them up here anyway..!) She almost died repairing Shou's soul- the first time had her saved by the Light Trickster 'Reynard', a mysterious fox-spirit who decided to bind himself to Yume by utilizing the gap between herself and her own shadow. Shou would be saved soon after, and it would be his insistence on getting to know the doctor who 'saved him' that started breaking the shell she'd encased herself in.
She's met with the former 'Sky Trickster' Tenjin, in broken form... An experience that threw her into a rage that hadn't happened since childhood as she realized that the twins she was now treating had once been one single, adult human being as opposed to a pair of identical eight year old children with no clue as to what their own father had done to them. She's met with Hatsu and Veles, the Trickster of the Wood, and learned that somehow, she'll meet their past counterpart 100 years in the past... A meeting that would ironically cause Hatsu to awaken Veles before being sealed in wood, waking with the goal of utter vengeance.
After that altercation was dealt with, Hatsu would rejoin the group after meeting with the Fire Trickster, 'Coyote'... Or 'Hue Hue Coyotyl' as he was called in Mesoamerican myth. Coyote would inhabit a body that, similar to Reynard's choice of human disguise, would be similar to those Hatsu knew in the past- and for good reason. Coyote's host died shortly after the two entered an agreement. With the agreement unfulfilled, the body went to Coyote himself... His, for all eternity. Coyote's story would not come until it was realized that he was not the main source of problems in the country at the time though- and so Yume and her friends would find themselves facing the spirit of Water, Mamala, who had been so vicious in her revival that she had possessed her host and 'partner' since birth, using her power to shift it into an image of her liking... Devouring souls and humans alike in their path.
But Mamala's host, eventually taking the same name as his partner, would wrench control back- and as a result, with a bit of time, Mamala's rage would quell and the feeding would stop. As of now, they recover from the damages... The twins live with Coyote, what with Hatsu's tree being hardly proper for the girls, and Mamala, with the aid of the group, begins to re-enter society. And Yume begins to smile again...
Before one day, opening the door to leave her apartment takes her somewhere else entirely...
