Aw, Brighty, this is lovely. Thanks so much!

I'm happy you liked Voldy's little intervention-with-strings-attached on Snape's behalf. Many people in fandom have theorized that joining the Death Eaters must be like a gang initiation rite, requiring displays of violence if not outright murder from potential applicants, but while I'm intrigued by that idea, I'm taking Snape's "And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?" in book seven to mean that he hasn't actively killed anyone up to that point. I imagine Snape to have been a sort of white-collar Death Eater whose skill set and contributions were primarily intellectual, thus allowing him to keep his hands relatively clean, and I've written a DE entreé for him that accords with that idea.

I do love writing Dumbledore. :) I remain very fond of the Big D in spite of everything, and I always enjoy getting inside his head and anticipating what he'd say in a given situation.

The parallels between Snape's and Harry's backstories are TOTALLY intentional! They're already there in canon, of course, as are the parallels between Harry/Voldemort and Snape/Voldemort - I'm thinking of an LJ avatar I've seen that alternates between pictures of the three of them and is captioned "The Lost Boys of Hogwarts". It seemed like a natural move to extend those parallels in this fic; my motto in writing it has basically been "When in doubt, rip off canon some more."

Finally, I am SO sorry about the long lag time between chapter 5 and the still-to-come chapter 6. The combination of my classwork and an unexpected crisis at work have made it impossible to continue posting on the schedule I had hoped for, but - fingers crossed - things are finally starting to calm down a bit.

I know you've been crazy lately too, but if you're still able, I just might take you up on that betaing offer! ;)
