The Monetary Woes of Sirius Black

Jun 22, 2006 13:33

WHO: Sirius and James
WHAT: Sirius receives a much-welcomed gift and takes James with him to celebrate.
WHERE: Starts in James's house
WHEN: June 22, 1977
RATING: G (I think?) Possible PG for Sirius's language?

Sirius chewed the end of the quill in his hand, leaning back in his chair with a piece of parchment spread out across his lap. It wasn't that he was going to write anything - not like he could think of anything to write, anyways - but it helped him get into a frame of mind. His thinking mode, so to speak.

Because simply put, Sirius was dirt poor. The trip back from Hogwarts had almost cleared out his already pitifully thin wallet, and he now had a single Sickle and a handful of Knuts to his name. Not the kind of money he wanted for his summer break.

He could invest, he considered with a dark expression. But accounts would give him almost nothing - maybe a Knut a year in interest - and to hell if he'd actually try Muggle versions of investment. They didn't make any sense to him anyways.

Or he could - again, a shudder - get a job. Waiting tables at a nearby restaurant. "Yes, sir" and "No, sir" and "Right away, ma'am" to ignorant Muggles who thought they were the next big thing and didn't realize how little they actually knew of the world. Working in a Wizarding establishment would be even worse - they'd recognize him, there. After all, Blacks were a recognizable sort. Especially high-profile, estranged ones. The thought of bumping into someone like Rabastan Lestrange and being forced to wait his table was enough to make him toss the entire idea of jobs aside.

At that moment, an owl began tapping rapidly on the window - one with a Black-encrested envelope. "Merlin's balls," Sirius groaned. "What the hell does my banshee mother want - to laugh at me?" He let in the owl and swiped the envelope without much of a greeting or offer of owl treats. Sitting back down in his chair, he swiftly slit open the envelope and began reading the letter aloud.

"Dear Sirius - what, back on a first name basis? - I hope your first full summer away from home has been an eventful one. As you have shown yourself to be an exemplary young man in the past year - what the fuck? - and have been one of my most treasured nephews - OH, Uncle Alphard - I've decided to remedy your parents' treatment of your decision so far. So, I have decided to...to....to MATCH YOUR PARENTS' INHERITANCE FOR YOU WITH MY OWN MONEY? It has already been wired into your account and legally protected from your parents. No doubt it will help the problems you are currently facing!?"

Sirius promptly shot up and ran out of the room, the letter fisted in his hand. "JAAAAAAAAAAAMES!!!!!!"
