Rabastan was swiftly regretting ever suggesting to Narcissa that she take him shopping. It was bad enough having her lecture him on what he should be wearing, but she had spent the greater part of their robe-shopping efforts focusing on herself. He was not surprised.

And her cheeriness from throughout the week, which had now exploded while shopping, was not rubbing off on him. If anything, it was making Rabastan even more sullen.

He looked at the light blue fabric and sighed. "Er, it looks nice, but... well honestly, Cis, I'm not seeing the difference between this light blue and the last light blue. They all look good on you." He noticed that Narcissa was deliberately holding the fabric to her thigh, seemingly checking a hemline, and he gave a questioning look. He had of course seen witches in short robes, but it struck him as immodest. "Isn't that, erm, a bit... short?"

Narcissa's smile fell a little, and she rolled her eyes and mouthed to Merlin for help. Apparently her discussion with him on different fabrics earlier that morning had been for nothing, and it had been one of her better ones too. She pursed her lips, and held it up to Rabastan's eyes.

"No, Rabastan. This one is a totally different shade, and the fabrics completely different style - Puffeskin, and it has a pattern. Honestly."

"What- Oh. Do you really thi-" Narcissa trailed off, as her eyes flashed in a quick panic. Her mother's comments on the style had led her to believe that the root of the problem lay in the thoughts and reactions they tended to raise in Wizards. Surely, she hadn't been wrong? "I thought Wizards liked them short. I mean, I don't know, I thought it was -" She raised her shoulders and dropped them in a nervous shrug, and lamely added; "Cute?"

Rabastan squinted at the fabric. Yes, he did see that it had a very faint pattern and a slightly different texture, but the shade really did not look too different. He was trying. Kind of ( ... )

Despite an initial exasperated sigh at his first comment, Narcissa was somewhat satisfied with Rabastan's elaboration - there would be hope yet for the boy, it seemed. Still, he didn't posess Regulus's fashion sense just yet. She shook her head slightly, and held the fabric up to him; "No, this is a paler shade of light blue than the last; it's lighter. Honestly, Rabastan, you ought to pay a bit more attention." In a voice amazingly like her mother's, she quoted; "It is the small details that make the big picture so perfect ( ... )

"Right," he sighed. "Well we weren't not good, but... oh, forget it. But you understand?"

Rabastan adjusted the fabrics on his arm and squinted at Narcissa, and then widened them at her suggestion. "No," he quickly responded, shaking his head. "No, no no, no no no. Narcissa, she was horrible. I think the dinner alone took off a couple days of my life. Maybe another, I'll think about it. But not her. She talked the whole time, about absolutely nothing and was just... trying too hard, and... by the wrath of Morgana, just no. When there's someone halfway decent, I'll let you know ( ... )

"I understand, Rabastan. I'm just teasing." She said, laughing at his exasperation. "We seem to be fighting more in the past few months then we've done since we first met? Discounting the fights we had when our toes still skimmmed, of course ( ... )

"I know," he agreed, "it's strange. I feel like everyone's a little jumpy these days. But it's not as though we've been really fighting. Just misunderstandings. Nothing that can't be cleared up." Rabastan smiled and shrugged casually ( ... )

Narcissa hadn't noticed any other jumpy behaviour, but simply nodded distractedly to Rabastan's comment. She smiled in return at him, before glancing back to where the seamstress had wandered off ( ... )
