I read this yesterday but had to take some time to formulate my response because if I'm not careful I could end up quoting the entire thing back to you telling how much I loved each part. I will try to keep myself in check : ) First, I love the quiet tension you create throughout the entire piece, especially in dialogue like this:

"You used to be better mannered than this."

"I used to be a lot of things."

The silence that falls then burns, grating against his skin like a tangible thing.

And this:

"Not likely, that. You're always trouble."

"More than I'm worth, most would say."

"I never would."

Lines like these make their history together a tangible presence in the room. Because the conversation is so sparse, the feelings behind the words seem to expand.

And I also love how you use the surroundings to convey Remus's feelings and develop a melancholy atmosphere:

Maybe they could make a game out of it -- Sirius would enjoy that. He laughs, but the sound is harsh and bitter reverberating off the tiles ( ... )

I love this so much, it's so engaging--so heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. I love how they come together in the end. Really nice.
