"What's her name?" Sara asks; slightly embarrassed. She'd never been told this simple fact, and with this visit being a surprise, she hadn't known to find out in preparation.
"Lila," Maricruz answers, smiling a dimpled smile of nothing but pride and happiness. She confidently but carefully releases the baby into Sara's quickly-ready arms. The living room of the newly moved-into apartment is empty except for a single couch and small coffee table, but, with a baby in her arms, Sara finds it cosy. The child's round face shows sleepiness, her eyes just open, blinking.
"She's beautiful," Sara says softly, with a break in her voice she finds surprising. It had only been two weeks since the freedom they yearned for was finally found. In every second since then, she has been endlessly relieved and glad, glad for herself and the chance of a new beginning. But in this moment, holding a now-asleep bundle of soft skin and chubby limbs, she is even more so. For she knows Lila will never remember the situation into which she was born, she'll only remember the stable peace and normality Sara knows she'll now grow up with. She smiles, and glances up at Maricruz, whose own eyes don't leave her child.
"Do you want children?" Maricruz asks suddenly, noticing how her daughter contentedly fell asleep, peaceful and trusting in Sara's arms. The question is personal, yet Maricruz had sensed right when she guessed that Sara wouldn't mind.
"I... uh," Sara takes a moment. She now has time to do so. She thinks, but not for long, for the answer is blatantly obvious in her mind, a fact that surprises her. She smiles. "Yes."
