You have my deepest sympathies for having to work this out. The NHS may not be perfect but the thought of trying to sort insurances to cover all possibilities...makes me want to hyperventilate!
And if you misunderstand something, it can cost you thousands of dollars. I know, because it happened to me two years ago. I thought something was going to be covered at 50% and it turns out it was only covered after the first $20,000.
Government run insurance does have its issues, but I'm glad to not have to deal with problems like these anymore and pay lots each month to be covered.
Sure there are things about my health care that would drive people insane too. Seeing the same doctor each time is not very likely, even if you're assigned one. You have to come in knowledgeable and able to ask the right questions (not an issue for me) or be loud and complain a lot when afterwards something goes wrong. Doing expensive things takes extra time, paperwork and possibly doctors. The same if you have to use a doctor out of the military.
On the other hand. It's almost free. I never have to track down who's paying, how much I owe, etc. And they try to actually use their resources well and in ways that save money in the long-term. Such as getting a prescription renewed for birth control is easy (and free) because that's way cheaper than paying for a pregnancy and baby.
Yeah, not looking forward to finding out how much the health insurance premiums have gone up again. Last year it was the same amount as my raise. When you make as little as I do, you kinda need your raises just to keep up on cost of living. :(
