A silent minute passed. Jaejoong didn’t really know how to react to the new merchant’s grins, he hoped the latter would let go of him. Concerning Yunho… well, Yunho didn’t want to sound rude but he didn’t care about this T.O.P. ‘Lame nickname is lame,’ he thought. Although, he had to prevent himself from insulting the man, he was already fighting with Jaejoong…
“Hm, Choi is it, right? Why such a nickname?” he still asked, trying to sound polite.
The said Choi ran his fingers through his black locks, letting out a sigh, half-smiling. Yunho was already sure he didn’t like the guy.
“Because I’m always at the ‘top’, and ‘T.O.P’ sounds cool in English,” he replied proudly. “Well… Aren’t you going to introduce yourselves?”
“I’m Yunho-”
“Okay okay, what about you?” T.O.P cut Yunho off, eyeing the third young man, eager to know his name.
“Jaejoong,” the blonde man curtly answered.
“Maybe we could hang out, become friends, I’ll look forward to it,” the new guy smiled once again, without taking his eyes off of Jaejoong.
And just like that, he left the two strawberry boys. ‘Who does he think he is?’ Yunho thought. Does he think he can show off like that just because his nickname sounds English? ‘Well Yunho can be heard as ‘Uknow’ too!’ Seriously, who allowed this guy to interrupt him while he was talking? Especially to pay more attention to that Kim guy? By the way, why was he so interested in him? Yunho finally concluded that he didn’t like the guy -oh no.
Normally you would be happy when someone seemed to pay attention to you, but Jaejoong wasn’t. He should be blushing, feeling embarrassed and having this goofy smile on the face but no. His cheeks weren’t red, he was feeling rather humiliated and was frowning even more. He already hated this T.O.P. before he even showed up and now… he thought that he hated him even more than Yunho. Something that he never thought would be possible.
They both stayed silent, in their thoughts. That Choi guy was synonym of troubles, it was at that moment that they both realized it.
“I really don’t know what he sees in you. Maybe you should join him in his stall, Kim,” Yunho sighed before turning his head to the other, grinning.
“What the hell? There’s no way I’d join that guy!”
“So you prefer my company?” Yunho asked with a huge smile, so happy for not missing an occasion to pick on his rival.
“Yeah right,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes. “Maybe you wanted to enjoy loneliness and have all the money for yourself, huh? Well I’m not afraid to say that it’s never going to happen, Jung. You can’t get rid of Kim Jaejoong.”
“Yeah, I kind of knew that already…,” the brown-haired man replied to him in a low voice, enough for Jaejoong to not hear him. “Wow, I had no idea you liked me actually,” he added with another grin.
“I… I do not! Don’t you dare twist the meaning of my words!”
The latter stepped forward, already planning to strangle his co-worker but stopped midway through; people were expecting them to act civil towards each other, they had to avoid any kind of fighting. Even Yunho seemed surprised, he knew the other was preventing himself from attacking him. It was… strange? Yes, he was not used to this yet.
“Hey… why aren’t you… I mean, aren’t you supposed to strangle me now?”
“Or so now you’re asking me to strangle you? I guess we have all our kinks…” Jaejoong tried hard to not laugh but failed in the end.
“Yah, Kim! You- I do not have… Yah!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep it to myself that you have some special kinks, Yunho~” he smiled widely, insisting on the other young man’s name.
Yunho gritted his teeth, that Kim guy was driving him crazy. Though, why was he expecting himself to be strangled anyway? ‘Aish, he’s getting on my nerves, even manipulating my own feelings. I don’t like that,’ he thought while glancing discreetly at his co-worker. On the other side, Jaejoong was smiling to himself, having so much fun mocking his rival; he felt satisfied. After arranging his boxes and baskets, he sat on the stool for a few seconds and took out a small mirror from his bag. Fixing his hair carefully -and of course ignoring a chuckling Yunho- he didn’t even notice someone else staring at him.
“Hey wannabe model, I told you that Choi guy had an eye for you, tsk.”
Jaejoong turned his head to the cucumber stall, realizing that Yunho was right. The new merchant was indeed staring at him, a smile on the corner of his lips, even winking at him. The latter closed his eyes and turned back to this stall. Crap, he wouldn’t be able to get rid of him, would he?
“Why does it matter to you anyway Jung, huh?”
Yunho didn’t even have to reply to him that the first customers arrived at their stall. That was a pretty surprise to see those two strawberry boys working together and not fighting -yet. Everyone seemed shocked because they all knew the two men hated each other.
“Hello my dear boys, how come you’re together?” an old lady weakly asked, approaching the table.
“We’re not together, halmunee!” Jaejoong immediately shook his head.
“We’re not, especially not with him,” Yunho added and pointed at his co-worker.
“Are you… implying it would be a shame to be with me?”
Receiving Jaejoong’s death glare and hearing that cold and serious voice, the taller man froze, wishing he hadn’t said those words. ‘Uh-oh, red alert. Kim’s imminent explosion.’ He gulped, waiting for someone to help him, anyone.
“Of course not, I’m sure it would be awesome to go out with you, baby~” a not-so-random person voiced out.
Everyone turned their heads to that unknown voice, seeing it was a charming smiling young man. Yunho let out a sigh, he shouldn’t have asked for anyone’s help, he completely forgot about that guy. The customers seemed happy to meet this new and handsome merchant, and were already planning to buy some cucumbers. Meanwhile, others were excited to know what would be Jaejoong’s answer to that obvious flirt.
“J-Just shut up Choi! This is so embarrassing!”
“I’m sure you will make a good pair though,” the lady confessed to him while another women nodded, agreeing with her.
“Hm hm,” Yunho coughed, “I don’t want to interrupt your little chat but… are you going to buy some strawberries from us?”
Fortunately for Yunho, T.O.P didn’t say anything else later that day. He didn’t like how he attracted attention; and because of him, he was being ignored by his rival who kept mumbling and groaning as well as by the customers who thought he looked so handsome. He wasn’t used to being ignored and he didn’t like to be left behind. The only positive thing was that Jaejoong and he weren’t fighting as much as they were before, but because of that, he got bored.
It was only the first day of that Choi guy but Jaejoong was already tired of his presence. The constant stares, the public humiliation, the public flirting was too much for him. Why did it had to be someone him? Besides, the cucumber guy was getting all the attention that most of the customers were buying him vegetables instead of their fruits.
“Yah Jung, why aren’t you saying anything? I’m getting bored now…” Jaejoong said in a nonchalant tone.
“Are you craving for some attention?” Yunho grinned at him. “Why aren’t you asking that T.O.P guy? I’m sure he would looooove to talk to you.”
“Did someone call me?” the said T.O.P popped out front of them, with a wide smile.
The blonde man instantly glared at Yunho, mouthing something like ‘I hate you’ before sighing. His co-worker rolled his eyes; was he doing that on purpose? ‘Yeah of course, he likes the attention and that lame-nicknamed man is willing to give some. No need to pretend, Kim.’ He didn’t even bother to look at them and left his stall, going to look for his best friend.
‘Oh no… he did just not abandon me with him, did he?’ Jaejoong thought, biting his lip. T.O.P joined him behind the stall and leaned on the table, arms crossed on his chest.
“What do you want, Choi?”
“Nothing, just wanted to chat with you a bit. I want to get to know you.”
“Well I have things to do, customers to deal with and-”
“There’s no one around our stalls for the moment,” the cucumber boy cut him off. “You know, if you’re interested in cucumbers, I can always give you one…” he added with a sly smile.
“But I’m not interested,” Jaejoong replied back.
“You know you-”
“Ah! Jaebom-ah!” the strawberry boy suddenly exclaimed when he saw his friend. “What are you doing here? Long time no see, huh?”
The Cherry boy raised his eyebrows, confused about Jaejoong’s attitude. Long time no see? But they talked in the morning… Catching the movement his friend was making with his eyes, he happened to look at the other merchant briefly and understood right away the situation.
“Jaejoong-ah! Oh my… What a small world!” Jaebom faked surprise while hugging his friend. “He left,” he added in a murmur.
“Thank God! Ah seriously this guy is too clingy and oh God, flirting with me in front of everybody! What did I do to deserve it?” Jaejoong whined.
“Whoa man, you have no luck! First you have to work with the person you hate the most in the world and now you’ve attracted a clingy guy whom -judging by the way he was staring at you- wants to eat you. Fighting!”
“Yah, don’t make fun of me. I think I must have done something bad in a previous life like eat a baby or kill cats to sell their fur or something… Hmpf,” Jaejoong let out a sigh, sitting on his steel.
“Eating a baby and killing cats? I knew you were crazy but I never thought you would be to this extent.”
He didn’t have to turn his head; he immediately recognized this grinning voice. ‘When one leaves, the other comes, when am I alone?’
It was already the end of the day when the last customers left the place. The merchants started to pack their things while chatting; this was a market, a happy place after all. At the strawberry stall, the atmosphere was quite quiet, something unexpected when people were referring to the strawberry boys. They were both busy with baskets, boxes and other boxes.
Ten minutes later, they finished at the same time and the long awaited moment came: the money issue. It was their first day as co-workers and this was not a happy task to do for them. But anyway, they did their best, they tried at least. Yunho put the cashbox in the middle of the table as a symbol of their co-operation. He handed Jaejoong some money while he was already calculating the amount of cash in his hands.
“Fifty dollars… I really hope you made more,” Jaejoong pouted.
“I only have a hundred,” the other young man answered, sighing.
Now that they were used to the idea of sharing their benefits together, they realized they had to work hard if they wanted to earn more because in the end… the money will still be divided.
“Wooo~ Hey gorgeous!”
“Plea-”
“Yeah whatever,” the cucumber guy cut Yunho before he could even talk. “I had so much fun, it was a really good day, wasn’t it? And oh, do you want to go out for a drink?”
“How much did you make with your vegetables?” the blonde man asked him, ignoring his interlocutor’s question.
“Erm… Two hundred?” T.O.P finally remembered after a few seconds.
“Get lost, Choi,” Jaejoong spat at him suddenly.
The Choi guy raised one eyebrow and walked away, completely astonished by that icy tone. Meanwhile, the two ex-rivals were down knowing that even the new guy succeeded in earning more than them. And they were two versus one!
“Only fifty fucking bucks. Ugh, this is so frustrating!” the smaller man groaned, taking his head in his hands.
“I know right. Come on, tomorrow will be another day, and we’ll work harder. For now, we can have seventy-five dollars each but I’ll guarantee you tomorrow will be better. Cheer up.”
Jaejoong widened his eyes, surprised at Yunho’s kindness towards him. He never thought he would hear such words and encouragement coming from his ex forever-rival.
“Thanks,” he smiled. “Hey Jung… I don’t… I don’t want to eat babies and kill cats,” he confessed, concerned about what Yunho would think about him for once.
“I know,” Yunho smiled at him. “See you tomorrow Jaejoong.”
