Pets

I was thinking of buying a pet because I read they can help you collect enemy drops. I think that would be pretty useful instead of running all over everything pressing "Z" repeatedly. Anyway, if I were to buy a pet, what should I be looking for? What do they do specifically? Also, do I need the meso magnet and item magnet for the pets to actually pick up those things? Is it even worth buying a pet?
