Fun with Christian children's shows!

So last night I was babysitting, as usual, and I had a lot of cleaning to do (they pay me extra to tidy up the house if it's dirty fuck yeahhhhh) so I plopped the kids in front of the tv and let them watch one of their videos for an hour or so. They were just in the other room, and I was checking in on them a lot while I cleaned, so I got to see ( Read more... )

Wait, this was a Christian show? Where the moral of the first episode was "obey all the rules nitpickingly because the only other option is anarchy"? Have they... read the Gospels? Jesus breaks the rules all the time when he thinks the rules are wrong!! I know, very young children are often too immature to be able to reason around a "law and order" mentality, since their "reasoning" tends to fall in around "do I get caught?" But at the least you could do is maybe show the elders relenting and realizing that their laws are too rigid, make it about communication etc ( ... )

I went back to check the DVD box (I'm at their house right now) and apparently that first episode was supposed to teach obedience, and it lists Jonah 3:3 as the part of the bible it's based around. Not that it makes it any better, I still think it was a very bad way to go about teaching the lesson.

And they do have some Veggietales movies, thankfully. I think I'll just put those ones in for them whenever they have movie time, they're much better and the kids seem to enjoy them more too.

Jonah 3:3
"So Jonah set out and went to Ninevah, according to the word of the LORD. Now Ninevah was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across."

Actually, I'm not entirely sure how Jonah fits into the message of "obedience," really, since Jonah never really learns it. Maybe the idea is that the Ninevites repented when they heard their city was going to be destroyed, and so too the cars... should... not drive on the grass?? I mean, that sort of takes what Ninevah was out of context; they weren't doing minor driving transgressions, they were a massive, oppressive empire that eventually wiped out the northern half of Israel.

Veggietales' take on Jonah was way better, IMnsHO.

I think I saw that Veggietales, and I enjoyed it.

Or I could be a rebel and let the kids watch Dreamworks movies. I'm sure they would love them.
