The Princess Bride 'Life is not fair'

The Princess Bride describes some of the thoughts I hold dearest about love, life, death and making one's way through life! This is my favorite book in the world next to Orwells' 1984 and Adams' Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy. Each has offered me different support at different times. This one was the most powerful, talking to me about life.

"Life isn't fair. We tell our children it is, but it's a terrible thing to do. It's not only a lie, it's a cruel lie. Life is not fair, and it has never been, and it's never going to be".

And thats what I think this book is about. This books says 'life isn't fair' and I'm telling you, one and all, you better believe it. (Goldman, 30th ed. 2003, p. 209)

Ok, I am a bit melancholy. But since I first read this book in the summer of 1987. Some of the words have not only stuck with me, but also explained the hardships. I used to think that, 'the older I get the more Death becomes a part of life'. But Goldman is a little more eloquent.

"Look. I'm not about to tell you this book has a tragic ending. I already said it in the first line how it was my favorite in all the world. But there's a lot of bad stuff coming up, torture, you've already been prepared for; but there's worse. There is death coming up, and you better undersatnd this; some of the wrong people die. Be ready for it. This isn't Curious George Uses the Potty. Nobody warned me and it was my own fault (you'll see what I mean in a little) and that was my mistake, so I'm not letting it happen to you. The wrong people die, some of them and the reason is this; life is not fair. Forget all the garbage your parents put out. Remember Morgenstern. You'll be a lot happier." (p. 210)

There is also a lot of beauty in this book. And I promise I shall talk all about that. But I think I may step away from here for a little while. Oh, and read this book. The movie was wonderful, but this book will bring tears to your eyes, especially if you belive in True Love.
